Summary
[edit]DescriptionDouglas GAM-87 Skybolt (50112071966).jpg | Douglas XGAM-87 Skybolt air-launched ballistic nuclear missile at the RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire, 8 July 2020. Intended to be carried by Victors and Vulcans, the UK government controversially cancelled it's own Blue Streel II missile in order to save costs and obtained several prototype Skybolts to test them. They found the Skybolts were incompatible with Victors so trial flights took place only with Vulcans. Then the RAF did not think the warhead was safe and it was decided a British warhead would be fitted instead. However, this was heavier and reduced the range of the missile so that Vulcans would now have to fly into Russian territory before releasing the Skybolt, making them much more vulnerable. Then to cap it all, in 1962 the new Kennedy government unilaterally cancelled the Skybolt project, completely upseting the UK's deterrant policy for the 1960's, which had been entirely based on Skybolt. However, it did lead to the US agreeing the sale of Polaris submarine-launched missiles to the UK instead, a much more effective weapon system, it has to be said. |
