The Urban League Movement: Q&A with Joe W. Trotter, Jr.
Joe W. Trotter, Jr., the Giant Eagle University Professor of History and Social Justice and director and founder of CMU’s Center for Africanamerican Urban Studies and the Economy (CAUSE), discusses his latest book, “Pittsburgh and The Urban League Movement: A Century of Social Service and Activism.” The book explores the Urban League of Pittsburgh, a branch of the National Urban League, to provide new insights into the organization and its impact.

Hagan Named Dean’s Innovation Scholar
Susan Hagan, associate teaching professor in Information Systems, was honored for her teaching approach, which brings together design, rhetoric and technology. Her students engage with information as a collaboration of unique elements and turn those insights into interfaces for modern applications.

Three Humanities Faculty Receive Endowed Professorships
Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences faculty members Michal Rose Friedman, Andreea Ritivoi and Ed Russell were honored with endowed professorships. They received this honor for their shared passion for advancing the humanities from an ambitiously interdisciplinary lens.

Connecting Peacemaking and Community Building with Policing
RaShall Brackney is often an “only.” She is a Black woman working in the law enforcement field, leading reforms as chief of police in Charlottesville, Virginia. She finished both a bachelor’s and master’s degree at Carnegie Mellon University. She also earned a Ph.D., one of only a few in her field to hold a doctorate.

  • Jewell P. Rhodes (DC 1975, 1976, 1979) will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Carnegie Mellon. She is the Piper Endowed Chair and founding artistic director of the Virginia G.
