Julia • Flying Dutchman Furniture • Furniture Flip Tips & DIY on Instagram: "Want to see how acetone can change the game for your next flip? Drop “ACETONE” in the comments, and I’ll send over links to all my must-have tools and supplies! Why I’m hooked on removing vintage finishes with acetone and a scrub brush: 1. Serious Time-Saver: No more exhausting, multi-step stripping marathons, scraping until your arms give out, or sanding for days. Acetone powers through vintage finishes like a dream, so you can dive into the fun part—like choosing paint colors or stains—way sooner! 2. Gets Every Last Detail: Sandpaper doesn’t stand a chance against intricate carvings or spindles, but a scrub brush with acetone? Absolute perfection. It effortlessly cleans out crevices and detailed trim work, ma

These old creams and oranges need to go so clean it first with a degreaser or deglosser like crud cutting. Next, scrub the chalk painted area with a one-to-one ratio of mineral spirits and waters so sanding will be a breeze. This cuts off the wax that was used to seal it. I use a scrub brush and green scrubber pads and make sure that you wear gloves. Dry everything off with the microfiber rag. Let it air dry and then you can sand. At Home Depot, you can find Bear's chalk paint line. It's only 20 bucks and it comes rich colors. This is soot. Tape off the areas that you want to avoid especially if you wanted to look professional. With any mineral paint, I typically when I'm spraying, use 2- 3 thin coats. When you're brushing, you can use less coats. Once everything is completely dry, I go over the top with a satin poly acrylic going about two coats. For very dark and very light colors, it is super helpful to tint your polyacrylic with a little bit of the paint that you're using for really smooth and solid application. Next up, let's strip the top. Using clean strip, a throw away brush and after wash, apply the stripper wearing your PPE mask and hardcore gloves. Leave on for 15 minutes or more depending on the climate and start your stripping. I love using a putty knife when I'm stripping because it just is really easy to scrape everything off and into a disposable bin. I always strip going with the grain on the table so I'm going from one side to the other following the grain of the wood. And to get it off the lip of the table, I typically go around with either a scrub brush or steel wool in grades one or two. Use after wash and steel wool to get off any residue left over. It's time to sand. Use 120 then 150, 180, and lastly 220 wiping every time in between. If you find that your sandpaper is getting gunked up, you have not let it air dry long enough. If you see sanding marks on the table, turn your sander over and make sure that you don't have any gunk built up, use sandpaper to get it off. Clean up your table with mineral spirits and it's now time for your fresh stain. Apply your stains. Staining sponges are my favorite because they hold a ton. If you leave on longer, you'll get a deeper stain. If you wipe off too quickly and it's not dark enough, let it fully dry and then do a second coat. The same principles of going with the grain apply especially when you're staining. You can apply every which way but your last stroke should be going with the grain. When you're wiping off, same thing, go with the grain. For this table, I'm using provincial. The sides of the table will get the darkest so make sure that when you wipe it on there, you wipe it off right away because it's going to be darker than the table top. I wanted to go bold with this table so I ended up doing two coats of stain. Leaving the second one on for about 15 minutes. These blue shop cloths that you can get at any hardware store are the best for wiping off stain. They soak up so much and you can keep unfolding it, refolding and use it on the same piece. Make sure you read the instructions on your can for dry times. After this was completely dry, I filled up my spray gun with a 10 percent mineral spirits to satin polyurethane combination for a really smooth and flawless finish. I put about three coats. For a breakdown of a cost for a flip like this, see the description below and make sure you comment table if you want these directions sent to you.

Julia • Flying Dutchman Furniture • Furniture Flip Tips & DIY on Instagram: "Comment “TOOLS” for links to my go-to products to prevent or fix these mistakes AND the my latex paint hack! Tired of flipping furniture only to see your hard work chip, peel, or look… well, meh? Here’s what you might be doing wrong and, more importantly, how to fix it: 1️⃣ Skipping Primer: Primer creates a strong bond so your paint doesn’t budge. No shortcuts here. Prime it right! 2️⃣ Using the Wrong Paint: Wall paint on furniture? Yikes. It can’t handle the bumps and scratches. Use a durable paint like One Hour Enamel. BUT, if you’re stuck with leftover latex paint, I’ve got a hack to make it furniture-friendly. Comment “TOOLS” to get it! 3️⃣ Using the Wrong Sandpaper Grit: Sand smarter, not harder. Use 80-1

Xiomara Bates •Home decor •DIYs •Furniture makeovers on Instagram: "Distressing wood !! DIY vintage bench . Got this one from FB marketplace and definitely wanted to get rid of the orange. I started by sanding completely and then the distressing process began. I used an axe to distress the edges and then a wire wheel I attached to my dremel you can also use your drill for this process to lift the wood grain. I sanded everything again with 320 grit to make my surface smooth to the touch and then stained it. I used Two wood stains , weathered oak from varathane and golden oak from minwax. I layered them and then I sealed it with behr matte polyurethane. I’m obsessed with the final result . I sanded them with 220 grid sand paper. I used two colors to create a more natural look . First ash wash paint (Woodandhomeaccents.com ) remember you always have to dilute it . I did 1 part paint and 4 parts water to create a thin water base wood stain. After my paint wash was completely dry I went over with antique oak by @generalfinishes and wiped it off right away . Then I use behr paints matte polyurethane to protect and seal my pieces . ————- #furnitureflip #beforeandafter #furnituretransformation #diyhomedecor #diyhome #diyprojects #woodworking #howto #learning #furnituredesign #furnitureflip #furnituremakeover
