About the Degree

The Department of Product Design takes a holistic approach to the development of new or improved products and processes. Also known as industrial design, the product design process involves research, identification of problems and/or potential opportunities, rapid prototyping and iteration, user experience and interface design, and more.

Product design is a good fit for students who are interested in a trans-disciplinary profession that harnesses creativity to resolve problems and co-creates solutions with the intent of making a product, system, service, experience or a business, better. It links innovation, technology, research, business, and customers to provide new value and competitive advantage across economic, social, and environmental spheres.

In Studio

With the studio at its core, the product design curriculum introduces traditional design fundamentals alongside courses in materials and manufacturing, history and ethics, human factors and ergonomics, and entrepreneurship to build versatile and agile future designers. Variable-credit electives allow students to customize their learning experiences, staying responsive to changes in industry and explore the fringes of what’s possible through design.

From day one, you’ll be working with your hands and gaining exposure to both analog and digital methods of making and developing your design concepts. You’ll continue utilizing industry-standard tools as you tackle increasingly challenging design problems and charting your own course and specialization in design practice through your year-long senior thesis project.
