The late 90s: Everyone was focused on the approaching millennium. Some people were embracing the future; some wanted to cling to the past. Fashion magazines, movies, TV, and music videos fell into mostly two categories: Simple, zen, utilitarian styles (the future), or dark, romantic fairy tale styles (romanticizing the past). The air was filled with magic and electricity. (And I miss it.)
