'Seasonal Highlights' has been issued in PDF format since spring 2007 as a seasonal bulletin focusing on the seasonal highlights of the monitoring results. For monthly information, please refer to 'Monthly Highlights on the Climate System.'
Highlights in Autumn (September 2024 - November 2024)
- Convective activity was enhanced in the central South Indian Ocean, from the northern South China Sea to the subtropical western North Pacific and in and around the Caribbean Sea.
- In association with enhanced convection, anti-cyclonic circulation anomalies straddling the equator were seen from the eastern Pacific to the western Indian Ocean through Africa in the upper troposphere. A wavy anomaly pattern was seen from southern Eurasia to the central North Pacific, with significant anti-cyclonic circulation anomalies in East Asia.
- The westerly jet stream shifted significantly northward from East Asia to the western North Pacific.
- Tropospheric thickness temperatures over the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes were record high.
- Seasonal temperatures were significantly above normal nationwide, because warm air covered nationwide. Seasonal mean temperatures were the highest in eastern/western Japan and Okinawa/Amami on record for autumn since 1946. The seasonal anomaly of the average temperature over Japan was +1.97°C, the warmest for the season since 1898, exceeding the previous record set in 2023.
The descriptions from Spring-2011 to Winter-2021 issue are based on the former climatological normal (1981-2010) unless otherwise stated.
In the descriptions until Winter-2011 issue, 1979-2004 average is used as climatological normal unless otherwise stated.
The descriptions until Autumn-2013 issue are based on the JRA-25/JCDAS datasets.
The descriptions from Winter-2014 to Winter-2023 issue are based on the JRA-55 reanalysis.
