Abhishek Bachchan is an Indian actor and producer known for his work in Bollywood films. He made his debut in 2000 as the male lead in J. P. Dutta's war drama Refugee opposite Kareena Kapoor.[1] Bachchan played the titular refugee in the film. After Refugee, Bachchan starred in a series of poorly received films like Shararat between 2001 to 2003.[2] He also starred in Kuch Naa Kaho, Zameen and LOC Kargil. Kuch Naa Kaho did well compared to other films released in the same week but was unable to make an impression at the box office.[3] Bachchan played soldier Vikram Batra in the film LOC Kargil directed by Dutta.[4][5]
In 2004, Bachchan finally become a fully fledged movie star after the commercial success of the action thriller Dhoom, the first film in the eponymous series.[6] Although he also worked on Kuch Naa Kaho and Yuva before Dhoom, they were not as commercially successful as Dhoom.[7] Bachchan was awarded Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance in Yuva.[8] He also starred in some other films like Phir Milenge.[9]
Bachchan next starred in Shaad Ali's 2005 film Bunty Aur Babli opposite Rani Mukherji, his first film in which his father, Amitabh Bachchan, also featured.[10] The same year, Bachchan also starred in Sarkar, Dus and Bluffmaster!.[11] Sarkar was a success which won him a second Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.[12] Along with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna he starred in Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2 in 2006. While Dhoom 2, the second installment in the Dhoom series was commercially successful.[13][14]
Between 2007 and 2008 Bachchan starred in films like: Guru, Sarkar Raj, Drona and Dostana. Guru received mostly positive reviews from critics.[15][16][17][18] He also earned two nominations, Filmfare Best Actor Award for Dostana and Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Sarkar Raj.[19] In 2009, Bachchan appeared in Delhi-6 and Paa.[20] He won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi as a producer for Paa.[a][22] Although Bachchan received critical acclaim for his work in Guru, and garnered equal praise for films such as Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Paa and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna,[23] he experienced a brief setback in his career,[23][24][25] after which he appeared in the blockbusters Bol Bachchan and Dhoom 3.[26] He won various awards for his performance in Bol Bachchan.[27][28][29][30] Box Office India declared the third installment of the Dhoom series—"the biggest hit of 2013"—two days after its release.[31][32] As of 2010, Bachchan was one of the highest paid actors in Bollywood.[33]
