Line 31:
The city is described as being multiethnic. In terms of its human population, Ankh-Morpork encompasses communities including assorted Klatchian, Lancastrian and Sto Plains economic migrants, Omnian missionaries, Agatean and Borogravian refugees, and assorted barbarian tribes whose attempted invasions of the city merely resulted into their absorption into its population.
The city's 'multiethnic' population also includes other sapient Discworld species, including dwarves, trolls, Igors, werewolves, vampires, zombies, gnolls, gnomes, and various occult or undead species, which have migrated from their traditional homelands and integrated with the larger Ankh-Morpork population. Ankh-Morpork's dwarf population is so large that the city technically constitutes the largest dwarf city on the Disc, surpassing the powerful settlement at Copperhead and even the dwarfish capital of Schmaltzberg in Überwald. Members of Ankh-Morpork's non-human population are largely considered to be more liberal and cosmopolitan than their counterparts elsewhere, chiefly Überwald
Due to the demographics of Ankh-Morpork, the staffs of civic institutions - most notably, the City Watch - are required to reflect the diversity of the population. It has also resulted in the affairs of other nations and species, notably the coronation of the Low King of the Dwarves in ''[[The Fifth Elephant]]'' and Borogravia's latest war against its neighbours in ''[[Monstrous Regiment (novel)|Monstrous Regiment]]'', having direct impacts on civic order in Ankh-Morpork, necessitating Ankh-Morporkian diplomatic intervention.
