User:Tamzin/Discretionary admin things

There's certain administrative actions that are a matter of an individual administrator's discretion. Different admins may have different personal policies. Here are mine.

Self-requested blocks

edit

I am generally opposed to self-requested blocks. If you need to not be editing, you should just not be editing. However, at my RfA, I was asked about the problem of Internet addiction on Wikipedia, and I realized that in that self-requested block may make sense in limited cases to help an editor improve their mental health. As such, I've devised the following policy.

I'll caution, this is one of the strictest self-requested block policies there is. If you want to be blocked under more generous terms, please peruse the other admins at Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to consider placing self-requested blocks. If you nonetheless choose me, I'm assuming it's because you agree with the philosophy behind my approach, and will enforce it strictly.

  • By requesting a block, you agree that you are not currently able to stay away from Wikipedia on your own.
  • Before I place the block, you must communicate to me, publicly or privately, some goal that you need to meet in order for you to be ready to return to editing. This could be something like "I need to be getting less than four hours of screen time per day for a week straight" or "I need to be on a good sleep schedule". Something like "I just need to be blocked till finals are over" does not count as a goal; again, there are other admins willing to block for that sort of thing.
  • Post on my talkpage requesting the block, indicating that you have read this section in full and agree to its provisions.
  • I will block you indefinitely, autoblock enabled, talkpage access disabled. Email can be disabled if you would like, provided you have another means by which to contact me.
  • This is considered a "for-cause" block. Evasion of it, including through logged-out editing, will be treated like any other sockpuppetry. Asking other editors to make edits on your behalf will be treated as solicitation of meatpuppetry.
  • When you have met your goal, contact me by email, on IRC, or on Discord. This part is on the honor system. I am not your therapist. If you say you've met your goal, I will unblock you.
    • If I go more than a week without responding to your message, you can request an unblock from any other admin or UTRS.

Permissions requests

edit

I am willing to grant rollback or pending changes reviewer permissions outside of the PERM framework. My criteria are in some ways more relaxed than other admins', and in other ways more demanding. There are just two:

  1. You have a history of generally good judgment.
  2. You commit to always being accountable for every revert you make. This means apologizing and fixing things if you make a bad revert, avoiding repeats of the same mistake, and never blaming anything on the tools you're using. Note that reverting a net-positive but flawed edit (such as an unsourced addition of encyclopedic information that could be sourced with a simple Google search) counts as a "bad revert" for these purposes.

If both of those are met, I will grant the perm in question temporarily for three months. If at any point in those three months I see you go against that commitment, I will revoke the permission. If we're all good at the end of three months, and you've been making active use of the permission, I will re-grant permanently upon request.

Deleted pages and revisions

edit

If you would like a copy of some deleted content for your personal use (i.e. not to restore the page), I may be able to provide that by email/IRC/Discord, as long as you have a good reason and the content does not violate WP:BLP, WP:COPYRIGHT, or any user conduct policy. If you would like to restore a page, please see WP:REFUND.
