Editor of the Year

edit
  Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Hey man im josh submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate SD0001 to be Editor of the Week for their technical work and motivational acumen. Recently named Tech Contributor of the Year, they run SDZeroBot, a bot which allow editors to generate their own database reports based on specified SQL queries, which also elegantly generates some of our most useful reports, such as NPP sorting, AfC sorting, draftify watch, and much, much more. They have been a member of the Bot Approvals Group since late 2020, where they spend time reviewing and processing requests at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval. They have also spent time creating a number of useful scripts that are widely used by the community at large. Not stopping there, D0001 has also made significant contributions elsewhere, such as to existing gadgets, including Twinkle and the Articles for Creation Helper Script, as well as having made contributions to core MediaWiki. Many users speak to how much they appreciate SD's contributions and motivational skills. Recognition for all they've done is the least that we can do. This nomination was seconded by Novem Linguae, MPGuy2824, Queen of Hearts, TechnoSquirrel69 and Sohom Datta

Thank you so much, you all! It feels great to be recognized. I had no idea we had such an award along with a process for handing it out. (Let me know if you need any scripting help for organizing EOTW :D) – SD0001 (talk) 18:39, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Lets pretend I don't know what "scripting" is! Which I don't. If you can help expand the range and awareness of EotW that would be good thing. Any ideas are welcome. @Isaccl: Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 00:19, 8 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Special:WantedTemplates

edit

I noticed a bunch of new "transclusions of non-existing templates" pop-up pointing to User:SDZeroBot/sync/MediaWiki:Gadget-WikiMiniAtlas.js. Would it be possible for you to add

// <nowiki>

at the top of that page, and

// </nowiki>

at the bottom of the page? This will prevent the backend software from thinking that the page is transcluding templates that don't exist here like Template:H:h Help. Since the <nowiki>...</nowiki> is inside of javascript comments, it won't impact the functionality of the script. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:31, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

This was from testing of buggy code. I've blanked the page. – SD0001 (talk) 18:40, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

User:SD0001/Making user scripts load faster question

edit

Hi SD0001. Thanks for writing this and maintaining it. Would it be possible to change the behavior for some mobile device browsers? There doesn't seem to be a reliable way to force a page refresh on iOS using Safari (i.e., without a real keyboard). I wouldn't suggest completely disabling it, but perhaps a much shorter cache duration like an hour? Regards. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 05:28, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

For now, I simply added &&window.innerWidth>768 to the outer check. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 19:49, 24 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Daniel Quinlan Some people have found the snippet particularly useful on mobile as mobile internet speeds are lower. I am not sure if it's a common requirement to purge script caches on mobile, to be worth adding in extra code to set a different cache duration. It's worth keeping the minified blob as small as possible. – SD0001 (talk) 08:15, 28 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's a good point about speeds. I ended up using a blank page to lower the age values to 1 second so they'll be refreshed. That only helps with the resources being loaded on that page, of course. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 03:28, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Good article promotions #2...

edit

@SD0001:Hello and good night! Sorry for bothering you in case you are busy but i need to notify an issues regarding this page (https://sdzerobot.toolforge.org/gans?user=KGRAMR): Iron Soldier listing has an erroneous date (1970-01-01) instead of the date when it was approved by the reviewer (2024-09-03). If you can fix the issues in anyway i would be grateful but if not then no worries, it's just an odd stuff i noticed when arranging my wiki user page. Thanks and have a good day :) Roberth Martinez (talk) 22:52, 26 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Fixed in the db. Not sure why it was wrong originally. – SD0001 (talk) 08:08, 28 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Minor parsing error w/r/t User:SDZeroBot/NPP sorting

Looks like the bot doesn't filter out citations in {{sfnm}} templates; see this page which has a footnote at the bottom. Mach61 00:51, 28 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

  Fixed [1], thanks. – SD0001 (talk) 07:48, 28 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Maintainer of HotArticlesBot: move config page?

edit

You're currently listed as a maintainer of HotArticlesBot. Would you be willing to change the bot so that it gets its info from, say, Wikipedia:WikiProject/Hot articles config.json? I'd like to open up editing of the config to template editors but can't do that if it's in user space; only admins and int admins have access. (I already convinced MusikAnimal to do the same with the Popular pages config.) Izno (talk) 00:07, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

  Done @Izno. The bot will now read its conf from Wikipedia:WikiProject/Hot articles config.json. – SD0001 (talk) 14:19, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I don't see a change in the repo that's posted on the bot's page. Has that been synced lately or are you hiding the adjustment in another repo? Izno (talk) 17:42, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't have access to that repo. I updated the source link to point to my fork.
Not that I think this bot should continue to exist. It can be deprecated once I figure out a good way to make {{database report}} support templatized queries (fetch a query from another page, but substitute some values). Even without that, it's still easy to generate such lists, as already done in a few cases like Wikipedia:WikiProject Louisville/Hot articles 2. – SD0001 (talk) 20:19, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the syntaxhighlight "copy" feature

edit

I complain a lot about bugs that linger forever in Phabricator and are never resolved, mostly because I am not a programmer and can't fix them myself. But you actually went and implemented the 12-year-old request at T40932, and it is great! Nice work. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:23, 8 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

My pleasure. Most of the work on this was actually done by the author of the mediawiki.org gadget which I just ported into the extension. By the way, it's a boolean attribute so just copy works the same as copy="1". – SD0001 (talk) 19:26, 9 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Administrator Elections: Candidate instructions

edit
Administrator Elections | Instructions for candidates

Thank you for choosing to run in the October 2024 administrator elections. This bulletin contains some important information about the next stages of the election process.

As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • October 15–21: SecurePoll setup phase
  • October 22–24: Discussion phase
  • October 25–31: SecurePoll voting phase
  • November 1–?: Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the SecurePoll setup phase. Your candidate subpage will remain closed to questions and discussion. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit nominators (if you want them) and have them place their nomination statements, and a good time for you to answer the standard three questions, if you have not done so already. We recommend you spend the SecurePoll setup phase from October 15–21 getting your candidate page polished and ready for the next phase.

The discussion phase will take place from October 22–24. Your candidate subpage will open to the public and they will be permitted to discuss you and ask you formal questions, in the same style as a request for adminship (RfA). Please make sure you are around on those dates to answer the formal questions in a timely manner.

On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. Anyone can see who has voted, but not who they voted for. You are permitted and encouraged to vote in the election, including voting for yourself. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see your tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RfA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, you must have received at least 70% support, calculated as support ÷ (support + oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("'crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation as a candidate, and best of luck.

You're receiving this message because you are a candidate in the October 2024 administrator elections.

Our Admin Election Test

edit

Hello there. As we're preparing to move from one stage to the next, this is just a quick note from one member of the test group to another, wishing you well in the process of this new alternative to RfA. It seems that there are more of us in this group than some in the community anticipated, so i hope that doesn't make the experience any the worse for all of us. Whatever our individual results, i thank you, along with the rest, for stepping up and testing this process; happy days, ~ LindsayHello 07:19, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Best wishes to you as well! – SD0001 (talk) 10:28, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to participate in a research

edit

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
