sandwich shell (plural sandwich shells)

  1. (construction, engineering) A structure consisting of a core (which can be foam or solid, honeycomb, web, corrugated or truss) sandwiched between two thinner outer layers, often made of metal or composite.
    • 2018, Jack R. Vinson, The Behavior of Sandwich Structures of Isotropic and Composite Materials, page 320:
In sandwich shells, because of their initial curvature, bending moments (stress couples) give rise to transverse normal stresses in the core.
