During the 2022 Quebec general election, the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government of François Legault campaigned on getting more immigration powers from the federal government to Quebec.[1][2] Legault has raised the idea of having a referendum on immigration powers,[3][4][5] a pledge that was repeated after the party has increased its majority.[6][7]
On March 15 2024, Quebec Premier François Legault met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to ask him to give Quebec total control over immigration powers, which Trudeau rejected.[8][9][10]
On April 9 2024, Quebec Premier François Legault said Quebec might hold a referendum on immigration powers if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau does not give the province more immigration powers.[11][12][13]
