Bukan (in Kurdish also called: Bokan) is a city south of Lake Urmia about 1,300 metres above sea level. It lies in the West Azarbaijan province of Iran with 225,391 inhabitants [1] making it the second populous city of the province.

The name "Bukan" is derived from Kurdish word "Bûk" meaning "bride" so the word Bukan means "The Brides" [2]. The population of Bukan is Kurdish.

Bukan is located among the ciyies of Saqqez, Mahabad, Tekkab and Miandoab. The main job of the people is agriculture. Bukan has a good mild atomesphere. the population of bukan is increasing severely, but central government is preventing it because of fearing kurdish structure of city. Bukan has been considered as a center for Mokeryan province(a province that has been offered by Islamic soviot union of kurdish cities of Azarbayjan province but Khobregan disagree with forming of it), in which, dictatorship of Iranian government conflict with the formation of it.
