Description
English: Australian War Memorial photograph A05816: "Studio portrait of 488 Shoeing-Smith Peter Joseph Handcock, taken in Sydney prior to his departure for South Africa with the 1st New South Wales Mounted Rifles. Lieutenant (Lt) Peter Handcock received his commission in the Bushveldt Carbineers, where he appeared on the rolls as Veterinary and Transport Officer. Lt Handcock was tried on five charges of murder and received two sentences of death, and, along with Lt Henry 'Harry' Harbord Morant, was shot by a firing party on the morning of 27 February 1902. Their bodies were placed into the same grave in a quiet civilian section of Pretoria's Church Street Cemetery."
