Article Feedback newsletter
Hey all!
So, big news this week - on Tuesday, we ramped up to 5 percent of articles :). There's been a lot more feedback (pardon the pun) as I'm sure you've noticed, and to try and help we've scheduled a large number of office hours sessions, including one this evening at 22:00 UTC in the #wikimedia-office connect channel, and another at 01:00 UTC for the aussies amongst us :). I hope to see some of you there - if any of you can't make it but have any questions, I'm always happy to help.

This page used to be called "Americas' Central Securities Depositories Association" and got changed by to "Mergers & Acquisitions International Clearing House" by IP user 112.198.79.240. Additionally references to this ficticous organization have been added all over Wikipedia by another user 111.68.49.186. Oppose count wrong
Monty, the oppose count at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/SarahStierch is incorrect. I'm assuming the sock vote is being counted, but Keepscases moved to support, and yet it still shows a count of 2. I tried fixing it (using # where I thought needed), but the only thing that worked was to remove the hat template, which apparently is interfering. Any ideas on how to fix this? - It looks to me like the count at the top of the page is now 170/0/2, and correct, and User:TParis/Tally shows its been X/0/2 for awhile. Where are you seeing the erroneous count? Monty845 00:02, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

- I looked through the links you provided, first anything that accepts user contributions, including other wikis such as procityclaim.jumpwiki.com/wiki/Alex_Gilbert, is not going count as a reliable source, and thus cannot contribute towards establishing notability. The only one of those links that really seems like you can make a case for it being a reliable source is http://www.showbiz411.com/2011/08/16/kanye-jay-z-throne-full-of-samples-will-fall-short-sales-wise but that link has another problem, it is just a passing mention that another recording sampled one of his songs. To really establish notability, what you want to find is an article that is on him specifically, or at least spends a signifigant amount of time focused on him, and that was published in an independent reliable source, the classic example would be an article about him in a newspaper, or a review of one of his works in one. While webpages that are not mirrors of traditional media can be reliable sources, they need to be looked at closely to see if the qualify under WP:RS. If you can find 2-3 independent, reliable sources that provide substantive discussion about him, you should be able to meet the General Notability Guidelines. Note, individuals can also qualify under WP:BIO, but I don't see anything that suggests he will qualify that way. Monty845 05:28, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

AFT5 newsletter
Hey again all :). So, some big news, some small news, some good news, some bad news!
On the "big news" front; we've now deployed AFT5 on to 10 percent of articles, This is pretty awesome :). On the "bad news", however, it looks like we're having to stop at 10 percent until around September - there are scaling issues that make it dangerous to deploy wider. Happily, our awesome features engineering team is looking into them as we speak, and I'm optimistic that the issues will be resolved.
For both "small" and "good" news; we've got another office hours session. This one is tomorrow, at 22:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect - I appreciate it's a bit late for Europeans, but I wanted to juggle it so US east coasters could attend if they wanted :). Hope to see you all there!

- I understand the frustration when an editor just refuses to listen, but edit warring is almost never the solution. (Unless its a really bad BLP violation) If the editor resumes after the 3rr block expires, raise it at one of the noticeboards so that we can deal with the conduct problem, but don't resume reverting. Monty, I want to apologize for mistakenly thinking you were not an admin. :) I initially looked at the bottom of your user page and it didn't show it, so I assumed you weren't. Then I saw your note and another one on my talk page and realized you are.
In terms of my block, there seems to be a gang mentality when an editor is blocked, especially when it's an IP, regardless of how minor the infraction is. Numerous editors showing up to comment on a blocked user's talk page, which I've seen many times, is like 10 police officers issuing a speeding ticket to someone. :p It's overkill and only serves to escalate an already-volatile situation. No one ever told me specifically what I did to warrant a block or provided any diffs to show inappropriate editing in that article so I could understand and respond to it. If someone looks at my edits, they'll see I was simply advocating for my position. Passionately? Yes. In violation of any rules? Not that I'm aware of. All my posts were focused on a content issue that I felt needed improved. And the funny part is that I made zero edits to the two Sandy Hook articles in question; I couldn't, because they are protected. I simply participated in talk page discussions.
I did remove two brief references by another editor on an article talk because I considered them inappropriate and harassing, and I read a talk page guideline that said under such circumstances they can be removed. Instead of greeting me by my IP name like almost every other editor does (IP 76, or 76, or no greeting at all), the editor chose to address me as "IP from (city name)". I knew it didn't actually violate WP:OUTING, but certainly was similar since it of course served no purpose whatsoever to reveal my city on an article talk page, other than to intimidate me. I of course realize that someone's IP city can easily be found online, but that doesn't mean that an editor should be announcing another editor's residence location on a talk page. There's absolutely no valid reason for it other than to annoy someone. So that editor asked about my removal at ANI and of course was told it doesn't violate WP:OUTING, which was not specifically the issue. If he was an IP and did that, I'm confident he would've been told to knock it off. But since it was a registered user vs. an IP, unfortunately no one had the guts to stand up and just tell him he shouldn't have done it, even if it doesn't violate Outing. The other removal I made was the editor inappropriately announcing on the article talk page that he filed an ANI report about my removal of the content. This was after he had already told me on my talk page and he knew I had already seen it. So, again, there was absolutely no reason to post it on the article talk page, nor was it appropriate to do it there. Again, there was no purpose for that other than to try and humiliate me in front of many other editors. He even bolded it, which indicated his intention. It's really sad to see how IPs are so frequently treated like second-class citizens.
Anyway, after the ANI I was blocked a few minutes later, yet had no idea why. My "aggressive tone", as it was described, only occurred after the block while I was attempting (unsuccessfully) to find out exactly what I did wrong. I simply wanted to see any relevant diffs that showed the bad editing which supposedly warranted my block. It was never provided. That's when numerous editors started jumping in and piling on. Please understand, though, that I'm not looking for answers to those questions any more; I simply wanted you to know what was going through my head as this block situation was happening.
Btw, it's also very sad to see an administrator mocking a user (me), as Dennis did above ("Give them about 30 more hours and I'm sure they will find a way" (to get blocked longer), instead of saying something like "Hopefully, we won't have any more problems with them" or "Hopefully, when the block is over everything will be fine". Making fun of another editor like that – even one that got blocked – is not helpful and can only cause more problems. His comment almost sounds like he hopes I'll do something to get blocked again. That is very disappointing. When an editor sees sarcasm and unfriendliness like that from an administrator, it automatically makes you think that you can't trust that admin to be fair. And quite to the contrary of what Dennis claimed, I am very interested in facts. This name issue is about policy and article improvement, which is all I'm concerned about. If someone disagrees with my views, that's fine. But to personally insult someone for their views isn't right. If you want, see the "Edit request - Sandy Hook School" thread at Talk:Newtown Public Schools to see what content I've had a concern about. All I've been trying to do is have a fair balance, based on policy.

- My sense is that the username is somewhat borderline when it comes to justification for a hard username block, and that there is a stronger case for the account being intended only for vandalism, which still takes into consideration the choice of username. - I have indefinitely blocked them as a trolling/disruption only account. Note that a single admin may not ban an editor, a ban is the formal rejection of an editor from the community and can only happen after a discussion on a noticeboard or as a result of an Arbcom decision. - I ditto'ed you both there as well. Monty raised a good point. My fear is that we elevate the positions too much as well. Just as with CU, I can see rare situations where it makes sense to make an "OS block, don't reverse" type block, but these should be very rare, and we admin need enough information to understand the block since it has so little oversight. hello i need your help removing a photo which was taken by and copyrighted by me (Rafiqul Islam, www.rafclick.com). the photo is the one at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasbiha_Binte_Shahid_Mila someone uploaded it to their flickr account falsely claiming that they took the photo, along with many other photos from other photographers, and i guess that's how it ended up here. but i would like this photo to be removed from wikipedia please, but don't know enough about wikipedia to know how to go about doing it myself. so i would be grateful for your assistance. i hope i did this right thanks. The only reason I have been doing many corrections on The Adventures of Timmy the Tooth page is because some people think it was a production of The Jim Henson Company when it wasn't. Really?! Can you explain please. (Because, that's quite surprising to hear, especially from an Admin. Did you include comments on User talks, article talks, edit sums at AfDs and elsewhere? Would it be helpful if I provide diff examples what I'm referring?) If this user's behavior has been "generally within [WP] behavioral guidelines", then really, there's something very big that I do not understand regarding fundamental CIV and the espoused "WP collaborative editing environment". - I looked at some of the AfDs, and other comments. There were a few that were clearly over the line, but beyond that, the rest showed a pretty combative editor, who was pushing some tenuous AfD nominations. The problem is that AN/I is only really good at solving the immediate problem, in this case, his disruptive edits regarding sluts and nazis. The rest of the problems are much more subjective. It takes a long road of attempts at conflict resolution before we are generally willing to block editors on the grounds that they are not respecting the collaborative editing environment. As for civility, the community agrees we strive to act civilly, but can rarely agree on where the line for incivil conduct is drawn. IF OGBranniff continues to cause problems, and but refrains from doing anything more that is really directly disruptive, I think an RFC/U would end up being a better venue to make an in depth consideration of OGBranniff's editing. That really isn't true in my experience, and if you believe that, perhaps it is your own individual view only. My experience was that I was blocked for a day by an Admin, and when I didn't show the proper subservient attitude (i.e. I talked back at him and contested his arguments), he found an excuse to levy an indefinite block, manufacturing a string of policy violations to feed his agenda with me, then proceeded to tighten the screws on my coffin and bury me 6 feet under. (He even erased my access to Email, without justification or cause.) No Admin was willing to do anything about it. (They were all disinclined to compete with him [except Admin AGK, who got my Email access restored], even though I'd received Emails telling me his block of me was bad, and he was not a well-respected Admin.) So your belief in process seems 180 degrees counter to my experience. I nearly quit WP as a result of this experience. Instead after thinking about it, I decided to throw my hat in an Arbcom appeal. I had asked several Admins for help before that last-resort attempt for fairness, and as mentioned, no Admin was willing to offer anything (except Admin AGK, as noted). (Had I been a Malleus, they would have lined up to help me, without my even asking.) Please compare my experience with your statement, then tell me if you think I should feel any different than I do please. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:08, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

- Sorry for the delay in responding, to respond to your points in order, (R1) RFC/U can have teeth, if a consensus is actually developed there. The reason I think its often perceived as not having teeth is that we often reserve it for editors who have had a long string of discussions about them at notice boards, and if it hasn't been resolved there, its usually because of an inability to form a consensus. I think in the case of a user like OGBranniff, it may be more effective. (R2) I don't recall specifically seeing that comment, but I don't think it would have substantially changed my position. With regards to the "masterbating" comment, my read of that comment was that it was not accusing you of masterbating per say. Saying someone has a hard on for X is just a locker room or uncivil way of saying they have a fixation on it. Clearly its not civil, and its indicative of a combative mentality, but again, I don't see it rising to the level of an immediately blockable personal attack. (R3) Its unfortunate, but its a grab bag which admin you get, and some are a lot more eager to wield the tools to resolve a dispute then others. I personally view them as a last resort. I wish other admins weren't so quick to block, or revoke talk page access, but its not something that is easy to change. And its true, when a person is block, and they aren't one of the most visible editors, it often doesn't receive as much scrutiny as it deserves, which is exactly why we should be more reluctant to block. I'm not really sure how to fix it though. (R4) Maybe my phrasing was less then ideal, I saw problems with the way OGBranniff was acting, but the conduct was not so far outside the behavioral guidelines that an immediate block, rather then more warnings and discussion was in order. Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions
We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:
- Views/Day
- Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
- Quality
- Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.
The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:
- Content
- Is more content needed?
- Headings
- Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
- Images
- Is the number of illustrative images about right?
- Links
- Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
- Sources
- For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

We are currently running a study on the effects of adding additional information to SuggestBot's suggestions. Participation in the study is voluntary. Should you wish to not participate in the study, or have questions or concerns, you can find contact information on the SuggestBot study page.
IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have modified the selection of articles SuggestBot suggests and altered the design to incorporate more information about the articles, as described in this explanation.
Note: All columns in this table are sortable, allowing you to rearrange the table so the articles most interesting to you are shown at the top. All images have mouse-over popups with more information.
Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions
We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:
- Views/Day
- Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
- Quality
- Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.
