[edit]Hello. On this page, all these pronunciations, some of which had no page numbers and one of which was written in Dutch (which I wrongly called "German," but which still does not help us with an English pronunciation debate), all show where the stress in the word lies. Do any of these sources actually give definitive pronunciations of the entire word? I also suggest we put a few solid sources rather than several nebulous ones. That's why I kept the ones that seemed strong or whose pronunciations could be easily located and thus verified. Wolfdog (talk) 00:35, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Do we really need that redirect? It is not easy to find any relevant google hits, the only remotely relevant hit I found is a citation from the year 1590 in wiktionary. Richiez (talk) 16:51, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Samra
[edit]The article Samra has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Another pointless Indian surname article. Fails WP:GNG - no sources discuss it as a surname
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Sitush (talk) 12:29, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Handlertheend.PNG
[edit]A tag has been placed on File:Handlertheend.PNG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit]Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give All Roads Lead to Rome a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into All roads lead to Rome. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:15, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Pandia
[edit]This edit removed the alternate spelling Pandeia. Which I've now restored. Was this intentional? Also you've added the pronunciation for (I assume) "Pandia". And I also assume that "Pandia" is probably pronounced "the way it's spelled", so more like /ˌpæn'diə/ but I don't really know. What's your source for /ˌpænˈdaɪə/? That sounds more like "Pandeia" would be pronounced. Paul August ☎ 19:07, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- The spelling Pandeia is a letter-for-letter transliteration of the Greek; although there is a famous exception in Poseidon, almost in every other instance ei is rendered either i or e, depending on classical Latin sources and rules that I don't claim to know. Wikipedia articles are not entirely consistent on this, tending to favor classical forms, but sometimes in more obscure articles using more letter-for-letter transliterations (to be clear, letter-for-letter would mean names like Apollon for Apollo, Asklepios for Asclepius, Hephaistos for Hephaestus, Dionusos for Dionysus, etc.). A search on Google Books shows that "Pandia" is about four times more common than "Pandeia" in this context, and that instances of "Pandeia" are often in German, not English. Some translations of Greek literature use letter-for-letter transliteration of ancient Greek, writing Ketos for Cetus, Penelopeia for Penelope, and that sort of thing. Wikipedia articles do not typically include such spellings in article headings, but instead relay them under the transliteration of the ancient Greek. The pronunciation is classicist, and follows easily recognized rules; a long vowel in the Greek requires a long syllable and emphasis in the English when falling in the second-to-last syllable. Rare names like this, which are not in modern dictionaries, can be found in older works like Webster's Universal Pronouncing and Defining Dictionary of the English Language and his Improved Pronouncing Dictionary of the English Language. Compare Orion, Priapus, and biblical names like Josiah etc. for words pronounced similarly to Pandia. Names like Hestia and Helios do not have long i's of any form in Greek, and so are not pronounced with emphasis or length in English. — the Man in Question (in question) 10:04, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for quality articles such as Agnes Blannbekin, Tomb of Orcus and List of common false etymologies of English words, for gnomish jobs such as spelling correction, for the stories on you user page and the diligent list of your contibutions, for " If you are rude, sarcastic, temperamental, or hostile, your section will grow stale much more quickly." - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

G'day, I noticed you moved Rinnce Fada to Rinkafadda saying it was the English spelling. This seems fair enough, especially given the lack of sources in the article. I just wanted to say I'm going to pipe the navbox link which you changed to point to the new spelling, since it seems more appropriate to have the Irish spelling as used in a number of the Irish dance articles. A question
[edit]Hi. Back in year 2009, you edited the page Weierstrass p, but I'm afraid I'm not sure about its accuracy. Could you please have a look at Talk:Weierstrass p#Cleanup? Thanks. --Teika kazura (talk) 22:43, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- Unfortunately I have no recollection of the matter, and (more unfortunately) I did not cite the source of my information, so I can neither confirm nor deny the accuracy of the edit; no doubt I based it on some source—I would not simply have made it up. — the Man in Question (in question) 23:28, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
Let me ask one more question: how is "pe" pronounced, "Pee-Ee", "pee", "peh", or perhaps "pay"? --Teika kazura (talk) 05:33, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- Once again, I have no memory of any of this. It was probably from a book I was reading at the time. Your point that "I suspect it's simply the German spelt-out name of the letter 'p'" seems very plausible to me. German Pe is of course pronounced /peː/, so that's /peɪ/ in English (according to Wikipedia's standard for IPA); but /piː/ would be a to-be-expected alternate pronunciation in English. (This is all conjecture.) Eight years ago, when I wrote this, I see that I called pe "a stylized letter pee", which suggests that at the time I understood it to have no distinction in pronunciation from English p/pee. Here are some sources that treat the symbol typographically: "There are special symbols like Weierstrass's 'p' (℘)" (1986); "Weierstrass … ℘" (1990); "Character: ℘. Meaning: Script capital P, power set, Weierstrass p" (2002); "The symbol for the Pareto boundary ℘ is called the 'Weierstrass p'" (2003); "Formerly this symbol, known as the 'Weierstrass-p', was used to denote …" (2006); etc. Here are some sources for "pe" I just found: "An explicit formula for such a covering is given by the Weierstrass 𝒫 [pe] function"; "A note on factorization of the Weierstrass pe-function"; "℘ is called the Weierstrass pe function"; "𝖕 is the Weierstrass pe-function"; and more of the same. As you pointed out, "It's the function that was called 'Pe-function' by some authors"—although I have not found any who capitalize it as if German. It seams to me, based purely on my present analysis, that if "pe" is accurate, it is only accurate in the phrase "Weierstrass pe", and not by itself. But obviously it's hard to search sources for pe without Weierstrass online and get anywhere. — the Man in Question (in question) 18:38, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Speedy deletion nomination of The Test
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on The Test requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Yesterday you edited the Waters Of Merom page to be a redirect to the Hula Valley article - although the previous article was a very short stub, I would be interested to hear your reasons for redirecting it to a page that references very little to the Waters of Merom. Would it not be more useful to readers to have a direct (if short) article on the Waters, possibly with a link to Hula Valley in a 'See also' section?

I've undone your edit on the Waters of Merom as I think the previous content is more useful to readers than a redirect to another page. If you disagree, I'd be interested to hear your reasons: either reply here or on my talk page and I'll try to respond as quick as possible...
