Перед Первой Мировой войной в искусстве Николая Константиновича с особой силой прозвучала тема возмездия, впервые раскрытая в полотне "Ангел последний" (1912). Над объятой пламенем землей - непреклонно стоящий среди клубящихся огненных облаков ангел, воздающий по заслугам за все содеянное зло, а на далеком горизонте - сверкающие зарницы оповещают о новой жизни на очищенной от скверны планете.

Рерих как бы провидит зарево военных пожарищ. Не случайно Максим Горький называл Рериха "великим интуитивистом".

Многие художники и писатели предчувствовали надвигающуюся катастрофу, и в их творчестве нашло отражение растущее чувство тревоги. Много картин Рерих написал в 1912-1914 годах. В этих полотнах было достаточно предсказаний катаклизмов, ведущих к разрушению мира: "Ангел Последний" (1912), "Меч доблести" (1912), "Крик змия" (1913), "Град обреченный" (1914), "Вестник" (1914). Все они предвещали неотвратимые страдания и разрушения через мощные аллегорические символы, взятые из фольклора и библейских сюжетов.

"И видел я другого Ангела сильного, сходящего с неба, облеченного облаком; над головою его была радуга, и лице его, как солнце, и ноги его как столпы огненные…" ("Откровение Св. Иоанна", гл. 10.)

...И пролетит над землею Ангел конца, Грозный, прегрозный! Красный, прекрасный!
