Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish اِیپَكْ (ipäk), from Proto-Turkic *yïpak (silk), a development of *yïp (string, cord, rope), whence ایپ (ip, string, cord, rope, line). Cognate with Azerbaijani ipək, Kazakh жібек (jıbek), Kyrgyz жибек (jibek), Salar yipek, Turkmen ýüpek, Uyghur يىپەك (yipek) and Uzbek ipak.
