From Proto-Semitic *šaḥ(a)r- (dawn, morning). Cognate with Akkadian 𒀉𒄘𒍣𒂵 (šērum), Hebrew שַׁחַר (šáḥar, dawn) and Ugaritic 𐎌𐎈𐎗 (šḥr, dawn; tomorrow, the future); see Canaanite deity Shahar.
