[edit]From Aramaic וַרְדָּא (wardā), ultimately from Parthian *ward; compare Arabic وَرْدَة (warda), Hebrew וֶרֶד (véred), Old Armenian վարդ (vard), Georgian ვარდი (vardi), Persian گل (gol), and more distantly Ancient Greek ῥόδον (rhódon) and Latin rosa (English rose).
