Etymology

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *ʔup (to cover, incubate, hatch). Cognate with Mizo [Term?] (up, shelter). The Tibeto-Burman root is likely allofamic with Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(g/k)wap (to hatch, incubate, cover), the latter whence Old Chinese (OC *kaːbs, *kaːb, *ɡaːb, “to cover”) (STEDT).
