Etymology

Probably from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ʔ-bu ~ *pu (to be born; birth; bud; bloom). Compare Burmese ဖူး (hpu:, to bud), as well as (“spore”), (OC *pʰruːs, *bruːs, “pimple, blister”) (STEDT), (OC *pruː, “bud; luxuriant”).
