Small seal script Transcribed ancient scripts

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *suː) : semantic (horse) + phonetic (OC *ʔsuːʔ). Sense “grieved, sad” is a phonetic loan.

Etymology 1

[edit]
to harass, to bother
Schuessler, 2007 suggests it is a voiced variant of (sōu, move), p. 450.
grieved, sad
Of Austroasiatic origin. Schuessler, 2007 makes a connection to Old Khmer [script needed] (sook, sorrow, affliction, grief, to be sad, to grieve), p. 451. The loss of OC coda is attributed to the long vowel.
