[edit]First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄀᆞ옳 (Yale: kòwòlh), from earlier *고ᄫᆞᆶ (Yale: *kòWòlh) preserved in an MK place name, from pre-MK */kòpòlh/. Related to 시골 (sigol, “countryside”), from Middle Korean 스〮ᄀᆞᄫᆞᆯ (Yale: súkòWòl).
Possibly related to Baekje 己富里 (*kopori, “district”),[1] Goguryeo 忽 (*kuru/*kolo, “castle”),[2] and Japanese 郡 (kōri, “county, district”).
