“Chile implementó en la década del 60 un Programa de PlaniÞcación Familiar ligado

al programa de Salud Materno Infantil del Ministerio de Salud, por el cual se
suministraba gratuitamente a las mujeres y a los hombres métodos anticoncep-
tivos. Además, regularizó las condiciones en las cuales las mujeres se pueden
someter a esterilización quirúrgica, una operación que está permitida en Chile
igual que la vasectomía.”

There are several ways to prevent the sperm and egg from coming
together. These contraception methods can be classiÞed into the
following categories:
• Not engaging in sexual activity: Abstinence.
• Preventing a follicle from developing: Birth control pills.
• Place a barrier between sperm and egg: Condoms, cervical caps, diaphragms.
• Killing the sperm: Spermicides.
• Surgery-blocking the sperm or egg with surgical procedures like tubal ligations in women and
vasectomies in men.
• Timing: Avoiding intercourse during the period of maximum fertility.
There is not a right contraceptive method. Different people need different contraceptive
methods. That’s why it is important to Þnd out what works best for you. Even if you are not
having sex, it is always a good idea to think ahead about birth control.
First and foremost, you should always discuss your birth control option with your doctor.

Lesson 3: PREVENTING HIV INFECTION
“…En el caso de nuestro país, las personas más afectadas por el VIH son jóvenes
o adultos jóvenes, encontrándose una mayor prevalencia en los grupos etáreos de

nes todavía creen que el SIDA no afecta a las personas “comunes y corrientes”
sino sólo a ciertos grupos marginales dentro de la sociedad.”

• Abstinence from sexual relations is the safest way to prevent the sexual spread of STDs
like HIV.
• Get tested and share your STD status with your partner before having sex. Then
practice safe sex techniques to prevent infection.
• Use a new latex barrier (a male condom, female condom, or dental dam) at each vaginal,
anal, or oral sex encounter.
• Use a water-based lubricant with condoms. Do not use baby oil or other oil-based
lubricants such as Vaseline. They may cause holes in the condom, causing it to break.
• Products containing the spermicide nonoxyono-9 (found in most contraceptive creams,

gels, suppositories, foams, Þlms and sponges) help to prevent pregnancy but may increase
the risk of HIV.
• Engaging in a committed, monogamous relationship with a person who is free from HIV or
any other STD is safe if you both mutually agree to avoid high-risk sexual behaviors.
• Always use new sterile equipment and supplies. Don’t share or use any needles that have
been previously used for piercing, tattooing or injection.
• Don’t share toothbrushes, ßoss, or razors.
• If you are HIV- positive, don’t donate blood, plasma or organs.
• Get tested and seek treatment for HIV before becoming pregnant or as early as
possible during the pregnancy.
• If you are HIV-positive, use baby formulas if they are available, since HIV can be
transmitted through breast milk.
