Swayambhu (स्वयम्भू स्तूप, aka the Monkey Temple), Kathmandu Valley, 3 km west of Kathmandu city, Nepal & part of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site (inscribed 1979). Swayambhu is among the oldest religious sites in Nepal & was founded in the fifth century. It is a hilltop Buddhist stupa surrounded by Buddhist & Hindu shrines along with numerous Rhesus macaques. Elevation=4242 feet, about the same as Salt Lake City, Utah.
