Brescia explosion. Aug 18, 1769 - Brescia, northern Italy. A large store of gunpowder (about 90,000 kg) belonging to the Republic of Venice exploded when lightning struck the Bastion of San Nazaro, igniting a fire which detonated the cashé. The explosion destroyed about one-sixth of the city. An official account two years after the event references 400 dead and 800 wounded, although later estimates report upwards of 3,000 killed.
