David Minkin on Instagram: "In the early 1700s, an artist by the name of Martin Engelbrecht began to create three-dimensional art in Augsburg, a Bavarian town in what is now Germany. 🎨👨‍🎨 He is widely considered to be the father of a 3D art form that flourished between the mid 1700s and mid 1800s. 🥇 This is an original piece, hand cut and hand colored. It depicts a boar hunt. 🐗 At the time, it was viewed in a large wooden box with slots at various intervals and a peephole on the side for viewing. 👀 I’ve been desperately meaning to create more of these videos, as I have a pretty decent sized collection of antique optical tunnel books, and I feel very deeply that these treasures should be enjoyed by as many people as possible. ❤️ My time is super scarce at the moment, but I will t
David Minkin on Instagram: "The magic of an antique Polyorama Panoptique, handmade in France in the 1820s. 💫 My newest acquired scene here is entitled Residence d’un Mandolin à Canton. 🎎 The Chinese lanterns are extraordinary as we go from the day to night effect. 🌝🌚 The slides were meticulously and colored and hand cut so that the perforations could pass light through tiny pieces of colored tissue paper during the night scene. 🌜 it’s incredible to think of the creativity and artistry that was involved in making art where light could pass differently through each side to give this affect. 😮🧐 The creator was Pierre Seguin, and he made these from the 1820s to the 1850s in France. 🇫🇷 #OpticalIllusion #Magic #Magician #Magical #Illusion #Illusions #Antique #Antiques #History #A

Lucy May Schofield on Instagram: "The making of ‘moon phase’. Handmade Echizen washi is folded, cut and dampened to receive indigo pigment hand ground from an ink stone, applied to a carved shina plywood block. Layers of colour are hand printed drawing the pigment into the fibers of the washi with a handmade handheld baren (press). Ten passes of colour in total are required over the four prints. When the prints are dry they are each hand cut into six independent pieces and glued by hand onto plywood blocks showing four combinations of image over only two pages. The hand is in every single stage of the making of this edition and so is my love for each part of the process. 🤍 Handmade takes time. Thank you for your patience.
