NCLEX Tip: Cyanotic Heart Defects
Cyanotic heart defects get their name because they cause cyanosis, often due to a right-to-left shunt that allows oxygen-poor blood to bypass the lungs and enter the systemic circulation. The two important ones you should know are: 💙 Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) ➡️ happens when four key abnormalities occur: ventricular septal defect (VSD), pulmonary stenosis, right ventricular hypertrophy, and an overriding aorta 💙 Tricuspid atresia ➡️ the tricuspid valve is absent, obstructing blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle, causing the body to rely on alternative pathways for blood oxygenation Follow @ArcherReview for more NCLEX tips like this!
