And, in order to unpack this dynamic in a dialogically constructive direction, the four classic marks of the church [oneness, holiness, catholicity, apostolicity], as articulated in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, will serve as the seedbed for the task before us. In order to unpack this ecclesiological dialectic across the creedal matrix, this paper will 1) examine the ecumenical potential of ANC, noting dialogical gifts parallel to the four creedal marks and 2) propose corresponding ecumenical challenges. In this paper I will be drawing principally upon material circulated within two ANC expressions—Salt and Light and Newfrontiers. This paper is not so much an attempt to bring ANC into dialogue with a specific tradition as it is to generate an initial assessment in broad ecclesiological strokes. In this way, my interlocuters are primarily systematic theologians of ecumenical weight. This paper is pioneering in the sense that it treats the fivefold polity of apostolic networks with theological and ecumenical seriousness, with previous scholarship focused primarily on historical and sociological analysis. The foundational question at hand may be stated as such: do apostolic networks have an ecumenical future?

In part one, this proposal will initiate by means of a synthesis of practical theology as a discipline, noting major approaches and methodologies in tandem with a pentecostal critique. Following this disciplinary overview, part two will turn towards Pentecostal-Charismatic studies in practical theology, culminating in prolonged interaction with Mark Cartledge’s scholarship. Finally, part three will conclude with empirical trajectories for the study of apostolic network Christianity, with discourse primarily stimulated through appropriations of Cartledge’s methodological insights.

This is a move away from “faith seeking solitary understanding” to “faith seeking relational understanding.” In order to theologically construct towards this vision of a relational epistemology, this paper will follow the intuitions of an emerging form of Pentecostalism that has stressed transnational relationality: apostolic network Christianity. Apostolic networks have championed a fivefold ecclesiology in which the ascension gifts of Ephesians 4:11 (apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher) function to normalize charismatic diversity in the church, but this ministry model may carry broader metaphoric potential, specifically in terms of a relational epistemology flowing from a relational ontology.
