Sanjana Krishnan

I am an urban and digital researcher and a computational social scientist with experience working in Indian cities. As a PhD Candidate, my current research looks at how the design and use of digital technologies produce a new approach to governance of land and housing in Mumbai. More broadly, I am interested in studying the political economy and material impacts of data, technology and algorithms on the margins and investigate how they works in cities of the South. I have received dissertation grants from the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (IJURR) Foundation and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) to support my research.

I did my masters from Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai. Prior to my PhD, I have consulted for development sector clients through my firm, CPC Analytics. I am part of the open-data community and am motivated to harness data and tech for public interest. I am interested in using ICT, big data, and computational techniques to understand and address socio-economic and spaial inequalities in cities. I am also interested in understanding the spread, use, politics and effects of digital technologies in governing cities and land in developing countries.
