Hi @mikeninerbravog yes good question. The reference is created via:

  1. An LLM citation_prompt asks for a MLA format citation
  2. The output is parsed into a MLA parenthetical in-text citation style: https://github.com/Future-House/paper-qa/blob/v5.10.2/paperqa/docs.py#L296-L326

Currently we allow manipulation of the citation_prompt via Settings.parsing.citation_prompt/structured_citation_prompt, but we do not expose the citation processing logic. I made #820 as it's a reasonable thing to want to do.
