Name tagging is common for school children in Japan, from bento box to stationary. (Probably quite universal for all kids). Whenever we received an order for personalization, we have a funny nostalgic feeling as if we are tagging a new bento box for a child. In the back end, because we are turning beautiful crafted objects into very special gifts, We took extra care in choosing the katakana characters that match the phonetic sound of the name in the recipient’s home language. We also spend...
Handmade Japan wooden bento box
Our followers have been with us for almost a year on Beyond Bento, a project that offer you a glimpse of the fragility of traditional crafts in Japan in real-time. Witnessing how the shrinking interests in quality handmade craft goods and the lack of successors could quickly eliminate craft heritage businesses. During the course, Beyond Bento’s production has transitioned between the last 2 remaining artisans of Hakata Bentwood craft. And as Ms. Tamaki Shibata graciously took over the pro...

Ah~ who doesn’t like heat stamps. They always extrude a sense of warmth and human touch as compared to computer laser engraving. In fact, after the handmade box is complete, the artisans heat-stamp their heritage marks on each one by hand. Occasionally, you can see uneven tones or slightly crooked ones, unmistakably hand-crafted. Heat-stamping also represents the family pride in the craftsmanship. As ShibataToku told us, “my family name is on it so it has to meet our standard of quality.”...

Many of our long-time supporters have been a part of the journey with us, witnessing the fragility of Japanese traditional hand crafts when there is no more bentwood artisans at ShibataToku. Ms. Shibata is now selling very limited quantities bento boxes and other bentwood products. Her living room used to have neatly stacks of bento boxes. But now she has to wait for 3-4 months for an old bentwood colleague to help her make small amount of boxes so she can continue business at her little sho...
