The pay and benefit satisfaction of public university faculty is examined in two phases. In the f... more The pay and benefit satisfaction of public university faculty is examined in two phases. In the first phase, a model containing only demographic correlates is used to predict satisfaction. In the second phase, the demographic variables are coupled with a series of attitudinal variables. For compensation satisfaction, pay level was the primary predictive variable. In addition, dummy variables for several academic disciplines, as well as a number of the attitudinal variables, were also significant. For satisfaction with indirect benefits, perceptual variables were the primary predictors. Implications for the management of public sector university faculty and methodological issues are discussed.

However, several different ways of measuring the concept have appeared in the literature, raising questions as t o the comparability of approaches. This study is a "first-step'' exploration of issues relating to the use of alternate measures of selfefficacy. ANCOVA results raise concerns regarding the comparability of measures of self-efficacy, which are undifferentiated in terms of level of difficulty, and measures that reflect graded levels of task difficulty. These measurement issues hold implications for future research utilizing measures of self-efficacy. Self-efficacy, an individual's evaluation of his or her capability for taskspecific behavior, has become an important explanatory variable in the psychological and organizational sciences. Indeed, it has been examined in diverse contexts ranging from fear arousal and issues of personal control to work-related performance (for reviews see Bandura, 1986; Gist & Mitchell, 1992). Although consensus regarding the construct's relevance has been relatively strong, agreement regarding operationalization has not been as consistent. Extant research has employed several variations of self-efficacy measures, which raises questions regarding the comparability of these different approaches. This study employed a survey methodology to explore manualspecific psychographic as well as demographic variables. Discriminant analysis found prior experience and time considerations tobe among the most important variables in differentiating between nonreaders and readers of manuals. Results are discussed within the context of Russo's (1988) cost-benefit framework related to information usage. Following this perspective, we offer some initial ideas for programs aimed at increasing nonreaders' utilization of manuals.

This paper examines the role of the Type A behavior pattern (TABP) in predicting several types of... more This paper examines the role of the Type A behavior pattern (TABP) in predicting several types of career movement of women. In general, TABP and in particular the job involvement facet of TABP, had a strong impact on several types of promotion. Relevant results and implications for future research are discussed. The 1990's present challenges to all organizations in the management of their human resources. There are continuing changes in the demography of the U.S. workforce (for discussion, see Barnum, 1991) and questions regarding the future supply of qualified labor (e.g., Hoerr, 1990). In addition, companies in the U.S. struggle with the effects of mergers, acquisitions, and downsizing (for discussion, see Leana & Feldman, 1989 or O'Neill & Lenn, 1995) and the resulting shifts in the traditional pattern of intra-firm movement caused by these structural changes. In order to remain competitive in these volatile times, companies must effectively utilize all sources of skilled labor and assimilate a skilled but very "diverse labor force into high-status, high-skill management roles" (Morrison & Von Glinow, 1990, p. 200).
