The Global Health Case Competition is an innovative student competition that rallies graduate and undergraduate students from across UK to form interdisciplinary teams that develop strategies to address a critical global health challenge.

2024 Case Competition

The 2023 Global Health Case Competition engaged students to come up with a plan to combat youth mental health challenges across Liberia.
Team 13 took first place with their presentation, “LIFT UP Mental Health: Liberia Initiative to Foster Ties & Unite People for better Mental Health." The winning prize was $1,500.00, and the team also represented UK at Emory University's 2023 International Case Competition.
In addition, participants listened to virtual keynote "Liberia – the Road to Resilience in Health: Ebola to COIVD-19” given by Dr. Mosoka Fallah. Dr. Fallah serves as the program manager at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Saving Lives and Livelihoods Initiative. He was named Time Person of the Year in 2014.

Global Health Case Competition Lecture
Dr. Guerda Nicolas will deliver the 2024 Global Health Case Competition Keynote on October 18, 2024 in TODD 152. Her topic will be "Beyond the Headlines: Unveiling the Social Impact on Women and Girls in Ayiti (Haiti)."

Who can participate?
Undergraduate, graduate and professional students enrolled in any UK college are invited to participate. Teams are comprised of four to six students and at least 3 different UK colleges must be represented. Already formed teams can work together as long as they meet the requirement of no more than 3 members from the same college.
After you register and are selected, members will be randomly assigned to teams. Post-graduate and post-doctoral fellows are not eligible to participate.
Teams with members from diverse backgrounds and colleges are often able to create more well-rounded case solutions, and have a better chance of advancing to the final round.
How many students can participate?
Teams are made up of 4-6 students, each team representing a minimum of 3 colleges. The maximum number of teams will be 18.
What is the time commitment for participants?
The case is released late on the Monday before the Saturday competition. Presentations will be due the morning of the competition.
Once the case is released, it is at each team's discretion as to how much time it spends working on its presentation. In addition to attendance at mandatory events the week of the competition, successful teams have found that spending an additional 10-20 hours working together on their project yields optimal results.
Below is the general schedule:
- Friday – Deadline for registration
- Monday – Participants receive case and team assignment
- Meet and Greet, orientation from 5-6pm
- Opening remarks, meet event organizers
- Overview of the week’s schedule
- Case presentation overview
- Meet and Greet, orientation from 5-6pm
- Thursday – Virtual time with mentors total of one hour between 2-5pm
- Friday – Global Health Lecture 12:00pm
- Saturday – Case Competition 8:00am – 4:00pm
Go ahead and be optimistic with your planning, as the winning UK team will also be competing at the Emory International Case Competition in Spring 2023, with the week leading up to it similar to UK's case competition scheduling format.
Note:
- Friday time with mentors is a range of times when mentoring will occur. Each team will only receive 1 hour of scheduled mentorship, then are free to pursue other obligations, including working on the case.
- Saturday, Case Competition presentation day - Teams will attend a short opening session, are scheduled for a 30 minute presentation (including Q&A) and are welcome to attend a 30 minute awards ceremony.
What were the case topics in past years?
Past topics have included gun violence in Honduras, tobacco use in India, childhood obesity in Mexico, unknown viral outbreak in Qatar during the World Cup, palliative care needs in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
