ALEXANDRA QUINN PARMELY

I choose to attend the university in 2017 for a bachelor’s degree in psychology. At the time it was the most logical, economic choice for a first-generation college student that desired to continue to learn. I chose to continue my education with a masters in Community Mental Health Counseling, due to a deep hope to make a difference in the world. I began my first semester in Counselor Education and Supervision in Fall 2023. For many years, I have chosen to stay in Laramie for a variety of reasons. The primary is that the community and culture fit for who I am at this place in my life and challenge me to grow.

ANTICIPATED GRADUATION SPRING 2027

Current Position: Graduate Assistant

I chose the University of Wyoming because the Department of Communication’s well-structured curriculum aligns perfectly with my career aspirations to become a communication strategist. I believe the program will prepare me for future Ph.D. studies in Political Science by providing a solid foundation.

I chose UW because the program put a strong emphasis on conducting research abroad. The accessibility of international experiences through UW is unparalleled in higher education. While both my BA and MA from UW allowed me opportunities to expand my international experience, my MA sharpened my professional perspective on international affairs. The staff and faculty at UW enabled me to explore the principles and ideologies foundational to my career, and to engage with large scale international institutions that would become integral to my work.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

Graduate students have the opportunity to receive an assistantship that will reduce the cost of tuition and mandatory fees. Currently, the cost of student health insurance is included in the assistantship. A stipend is also included with an assistantship. Assistantships are available in a number of fields and include duties such as instructor, reader, laboratory assistant and/or other teaching responsibilities. Other assistantships involve a variety of research functions. Some assistantships are funded through various off-campus organizations for specific research purposes. Stipends vary depending upon tasks assigned and experience of the student; most assistantships also include tuition and fee reductions for all or part of the tuition costs. Incidental student fees are usually the student’s responsibility.

There are several fellowships that graduate students can apply for. Students interested in an assistantship or a fellowship should reach out to their academic advisor to learn about funding opportunities that are available. For more information about assistantships and stipends please visit: uwyo.edu/assistantships

LIFE IN LARAMIE

Nestled between the beautiful Snowy and Laramie mountain ranges, Laramie is a small town that offers the conveniences of a larger city. With a bustling downtown, students can find an abundance of local shops and restaurants within walking distance of the university. Laramie offers a moderate cost of living when compared to other towns in the United States.

Larger cities such as Cheyenne, Wy., Fort Colins, Co and Denver are just a short drive away and allow students to enjoy metropolitan life, with the benefits of living in a smaller community.

Laramie’s location provides easy access for students who enjoy the outdoors. Several state forests and parks are just outside the city limits allowing enjoyment of hiking, skiing, camping, kayaking, paddle boarding, snowshoeing and much more! The university is home to an Outdoor Program which organizes several outdoor trips each year and offers low-cost equipment rentals to students.

Pictured is Vedauwoo Recreation Area, located between Laramie and Cheyenne, Wyoming. Vedauwoo is a popular place for hiking, camping, and climbing.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING offers more than 90 graduate programs and a dozen graduate certificates. Many programs offer online learning opportunities to help students who may be learning from a distance or balancing busy careers and strive to work toward earning an advanced degree.
