Poliomyelitis[1][2] (e duobus verbis Graecis πολιός 'cineraceus' + μυελός 'medulla' et suffixo -itis 'inflammatio'[3]), aliquando tantum polio sive paralysis infantilis sive paralysis infantum[2] seu poliomyelitis anterior acuta infantum[2] est acutus morbus viralis, accurate infectio ab homine ad hominem transmissa, praecipue a faecibus ad os[4]. Hodie non solum poliovirus causa notum est, verum etiam Coxsackie-Virus, ECHO-virus. Homines hoc morbo laborantes saepe facultatem ambulandi amittunt. Vaccinum contra poliovirum primum inventus est ab Iona E. Salk anno 1954.
