Australopithecus africanus

Its Phyletic Position Reconsidered

New Interpretations of Ape and Human Ancestry

Part of the book series: Advances in Primatology ((AIPR))

Abstract

In 1925 Dart proposed that his newly named genus Australopithecus was the ancestor of the genus Homo (Dart, 1925). Despite a recent rash of claims to the contrary based on misidentified fossils or erroneous dates (R. Leakey, 1970, 1973a, 1976a; Oxnard, 1975, 1979; M. Leakey, 1979), it has become increasingly evident that Dart was correct—Australopithecus was ancestral to Homo.
