According to the American Farmland Trust, North Carolina is projected to lose 1.2 million acres of farmland by 2040 to urban and residential development. That's second in the nation, trailing only Texas. North Carolina has four counties ranked in the top 50 nationwide – Johnston (19th), Union (23rd), Wake (32nd), and Iredell (38th).
