Syracuse University will host a Commencement ceremony—delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic—and other celebratory events for the Class of 2020 during the weekend of Sept. 17–19.
Commencement will be held Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Stadium. This University-wide ceremony, where Syracuse University Chancellor and President Kent Syverud will formally confer degrees, is for all undergraduate, graduate and doctoral candidates. Doors open at 8 a.m.
Following Commencement, all 2020 Newhouse graduates and their families are invited to join Dean Mark J. Lodato and the faculty and staff for a celebratory reception. The event will include a dean’s welcome, recognition of participating graduates and an opportunity to reconnect with faculty. A precise time and location will be announced soon; stay tuned for details.
For more information about Commencement activities for the Class of 2020, see the event listing.
Continuing to innovate as a leading higher education institution for electronic sports (or esports) and gaming in the United States, Syracuse University has officially opened its new, state-of-the-art Gaming and Esports Center—an exciting arena for competitors and those new to the action to take part in this ever-growing, evolving sports field. The community gaming space elevates the esports offerings at the University in support of student engagement opportunities and first-of-its-kind academic programming.
“This new best-in-class esports center is an important milestone in a project that is still underway to make us the best university for esports and gaming,” said Syracuse University Chancellor and President Kent Syverud, during its opening celebration Friday. “No other university of our stature is investing in esports like we are. This gives Syracuse University a unique opportunity to level up while others aren’t even in the game.”
The 5,800-square-foot center inside the Schine Student Center is the second recreational gaming and esports facility on campus. The esports gaming room at the Barnes Center at The Arch has attracted more than 100,000 visits by students since opening in 2019.
The new facility will allow even more students the opportunity to try their hand at esports and gaming while strengthening the University’s commitment to leading the way in esports through the creation of a space that sets the University apart from its peer institutions.
The Gaming and Esports Center offers something for every member of the University community, says Joey Gawrysiak, executive director of esports, including the first-of-its-kind esports communications and management degree program, offered jointly by the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the David B. Falk College of Sport.
The center will house the University’s competitive esports varsity teams and feature a long, elevated stage with 10 computers where teams square off in competition. Each computer has a camera attached to the top for live streaming, and there are two long, video boards running in front of and behind the stage, perfect for displaying match stats, graphics and video replays to the crowd of spectators seated in front of the stage.
The facility is also meant for gamers of all levels and interests. There are 24 high-end personal computers and assorted console gaming on systems like Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox, along with virtual and augmented reality offerings, two racing simulators, classic arcade games and tabletop gaming.
“We’re setting a new standard for what esports and gaming can be, and Syracuse University is embracing the impact esports and gaming can have at an institution of higher education,” Gawrysiak says. “This space shows that we’re innovative and that we have an eye on the future of gaming and esports. We’re using esports and gaming as an educational opportunity, and this facility is a showcase of all things gaming for all members of our campus community.”
The University and global esports and gaming organization Gen.G have collaborated on a multi-year partnership designed to enhance student engagement opportunities and support the University’s esports degree program. Along with an opportunity to participate in an intensive, three-week study abroad program in South Korea, the partnership will bring Gen.G’s Campus Takeover conference and program to Syracuse to celebrate the University’s Gaming and Esports Center.
The center also features a production area—where students can receive real-world experiences live streaming varsity and club esports competitions—and a space for student broadcasters to provide play-by-play and color commentary from the matches.
Will Delgado ’26 has been involved with esports since his first year on campus, first as a broadcaster and then as a content creator for the esports program’s social media channels. Delgado shot, edited and produced the esports promotional video that was shown during Friday’s grand opening.
“This space is going to have a huge impact on the campus community. It will help educate and inform our students on the potential career opportunities presented by esports,” says Delgado, who is studying both supply chain management in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management and television, radio and film in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
“By getting involved with esports, students can walk away with career skills and experiences that will serve them well in this industry. I should know, as I want to merge my passions for gaming, esports and content creation into an esports career when I graduate,” says Delgado, who is a resident advisor for an esports-centric Living Learning Community in Haven Hall.
During the ceremony, Syracuse University’s Counter Strike 2 varsity team, which claimed a national championship from the National Association of Collegiate Esports, was honored with a trophy presentation that will proudly be displayed in the center. It’s the first of what Gawrysiak hopes is many trophies to come.
Later this summer, the University is launching construction on a competitive esports arena inside the Marley Building. The third esports venue on campus will provide real-world, professional experiences to esports student-athletes and to members of the esports academic degree program.
The Gaming and Esports Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week and is located immediately next to the campus bookstore. All games and experiences are free to play for members of the University community.
The 40th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Planning Committee is proud to announce the 2025 Unsung Hero Award winners: Andrea-Rose Oates ’26, James K. Duah-Agyeman G’99, Student Coalition on Race and Equity (SCORE), Laurence Segal and Jamie Jackson (posthumously).
The Unsung Hero Award is given to community members, students, faculty and staff who have made a positive impact on the lives of others but are not widely recognized for their contributions. The awards were created to honor Dr. King’s vision of creating positive change in a troubled world.
The award winners will be recognized at the 40th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 26, featuring keynote speaker Sarah Willie-LeBreton, president of Smith College. Tickets for the celebration are available on the MLK Celebration website.
The Unsung Heroes are:
Oates, a public relations major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and policy studies major in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and College of Arts and Sciences, has dedicated her life to community service, leadership and social justice. She is the president and founder of “Girlz Rize,” a nonprofit initiative focused on fighting for girls’ education opportunities.
Through her work last summer with NBCUniversal, Oates amplified underrepresented voices by highlighting community challenges and successes. Her summer internships with Comcast and Hilco Redevelopment Partners demonstrated her ability to translate corporate resources into meaningful community outreach.
Oates’ leadership roles at Syracuse have included serving as president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Iota Upsilon chapter; co-secretary for the Black Student Union; events chair for the Women in Communications Club; a member of the Newhouse Student Representative Committee and an account associate for Hill Communications. She is dedicated to fostering inclusive, collaborative spaces that inspire academic and social growth and sustainable, generational change.
“Andrea-Rose doesn’t merely identify problems; she acts, empowering others to take part in solutions,” says nominator Diya Gupta. “Her actions reflect Dr. King’s enduring call to serve others and create a world where equity and justice prevail.”
Alumna credits her strong writing skills with her success at the media giant.
Over her 20-year career at Audible, Diana Dapito ’03 has leveraged the writing skills she honed as a magazine journalism major at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
“I learned a lot about being a writer and a storyteller,” says Dapito, now head of consumer content for North America at Audible. “Syracuse not only taught me those skills, but it sparked my curiosity and drive to continually learn and explore new possibilities.”
Dapito wasn’t an audiobook listener when she applied for a job at Audible, but the opportunity seemed too compelling to pass up. She got the job and has helped Audible transform from what she calls a “scrappy startup” to the leading creator and provider of audiobooks, podcasts and original audio content. Dapito attributes her accession at Audible to “raising my hand when opportunities came up and being willing to try new things.”
The following undergraduate students enrolled in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications were among those named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2024 semester. To qualify, students completed a minimum of 12 graded credit hours and earned at least a 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester.
Students: Please contact Undergraduate Advising at nhadvise@syr.edu with questions about your current Dean’s List status.

The Jan. 30-31 events mark the start of a new partnership with CBS News and Stations to include collaborative opportunities for students to engage with journalists in New York, Washington, D.C., and other cities.
CBS News and Stations is partnering with the Newhouse School to explore the growing challenges of navigating misinformation and disinformation.
Two days of programming that focus on questions about how to discern truth from falsehood begin Jan. 30, when CBS News and Stations journalists will take part in the panel discussion “An Eye on Misinformation and Disinformation.” Among those scheduled to attend are CBS News’ senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang G’06, congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane ’98, reporter Ali Bauman ’15 and CBS News Confirmed executive editor Rhona Tarrant.
The panel discussion and workshop mark the start of a new partnership with CBS News and Stations that will provide more distinctive opportunities for Newhouse students to engage with alumni and learn from leaders in the field. Plans include collaborative content creation with the network and student engagement with CBS News and Stations journalists in New York, Washington, D.C., and other cities.
“We are thrilled to work with Newhouse’s talented students and faculty, leveraging this relationship to foster meaningful discussions and prepare future journalists to navigate the complexities of reporting locally, nationally and globally,” said Laurie Orlando, SVP of Talent Strategy and Development, CBS News and Stations.
The collaboration highlights Newhouse’s enduring commitment to excellence in journalism education as the school celebrates its 60th anniversary, Newhouse Dean Mark J. Lodato said.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Newhouse students to learn from some of the best reporters, editors and producers in the country, starting with our timely and intensive discussions about maintaining journalistic integrity while combatting disinformation,” Lodato said.
“On behalf of Syracuse University, let me express our deep gratitude to the CBS News and Stations team for sharing their time and insights about these critical topics,” he added.
Regina Luttrell, senior associate dean at Newhouse, and Jason Davis, a research professor, will work alongside the CBS News team during the masterclass to help students navigate the tools and techniques available to analyze misinformation and disinformation. The session will include interactive case studies, analysis of real-world examples and a hands-on interactive session where participants learn and apply practical techniques to combat misinformation and disinformation.
The 25 Newhouse students participating in the masterclass have been selected from an application process, which was open to Newhouse juniors, seniors or graduate students. As part of the visit to Newhouse, members of the CBS News and Stations team will also review student reels.
While preparing for a presentation, Srivi Ramasubramanian searched for the word “professor” on Google Images. Each result on the first page brought up images of men.
Ramasubramanian wasn’t surprised by the lack of diversity.
“If there are inequalities in what the media systems are picking up, then there are going to be inequalities in [the outcome] or what we get to see,” said Ramasubramanian, who holds the Newhouse Professorship, an endowed chair position at the Newhouse School.
Ramasubramanian realized she needed to address the algorithms that influenced digital media. She also sought to address media biases, and to incorporate data equity into her work. In 2021, Ramasubramanian founded CODE^SHIFT, which stands for “Collaboratory for Data Equity, Social Healing, Inclusive Futures, and Transformation.” It’s a multidisciplinary research lab space for communication and data justice, with a goal to address contemporary social issues, especially those relating to race, gender, ethnicity and indigeneity, using media and technology.
A leading communications scholar, Ramasubramanian is an expert in addressing social issues in media. She earned a Ph.D. in mass communication from Pennsylvania State University, a postgraduate degree in communication management from MICA in India and a bachelor’s degree in visual communication from Loyola College in the University of Madras.
Ramasubramanian is the first woman and person of color to hold the Newhouse Professorship. In May 2023, when she was named an International Communication Association Fellow—the first Newhouse faculty member to achieve this prestigious distinction, and the only woman of color in her 2023 cohort. In September 2024, she was honored with a National Communication Association (NCA) Distinguished Scholar Award, the highest honor bestowed by NCA.
Ramasubramanian brought CODE^SHIFT to Syracuse from Texas A&M University after she joined the Newhouse faculty in 2021. She decided to use the research lab as a place to connect undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students from all colleges and schools across the University, as “really big social issues can be addressed only when people from many different backgrounds come together,” she said.
The CODE^SHIFT team—broken up into three teams that focus on the specific areas of quantitative research, qualitative research, and creative and public outreach—meets in a bright, airy room on the fourth floor of Newhouse 3. They host weekly writing sessions, monthly workshops, writing retreats and an annual research symposium. They also collaborate on research grants, journal papers, books, presentations, a video series, quarterly newsletters and community projects.
Ramasubramanian “has a strong sensitivity to identifying students’ strengths and promoting those strengths at every opportunity she has,” said doctoral candidate and CODE^SHIFT team member Raiana de Carvalho. “I also love how open she is to people’s ideas and how she helps us further develop these ideas.”
Ramasubramanian and her students have worked with resettled refugee communities, which resulted in media literacy projects and a multimedia exhibition of photo poetry about the refugees’ lives. They’ve worked on an award-winning project about how Indigenous news media and tribal newspapers cover climate change and environmental issues.
Past projects also include examining the media literacy’s role in campus activism and a maternal mental health project with Upstate Medical Center.
The work “is a combination of data as numbers, but also data as storytelling,” Ramasubramanian said. “We think about connecting legacy media and communications with digital media. It’s recognizing that these are all interconnected as we move forward.”
That work starts on a solid foundation, provided by the Newhouse School.
“Dean Lodato has been very supportive and our staff has been so helpful for all of our projects,” Ramasubramanian said. “Everyone is open to all the ideas CODE^SHIFT has even if they’re nontraditional and innovative.”
In addition to faculty from the School of Information Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences, several Newhouse faculty members collaborate with Ramasubramanian on CODE^SHIFT, including Nausheen Husain, David Oh, Sean Branagan, Rebecca Ortiz and Kelly Leahy.
Ramasubramanian’s long-term goal is to extend CODE^SHIFT’s reach beyond campus.
“That’s our future vision: How to bring some of the best scholars and speakers and thinkers to Newhouse and then take some of the excellent work that we are doing here to bigger audience across the state and nation,” she said.
Even with these larger goals, the most important aspect of CODE^SHIFT remains the relationships formed between members and the people they work with in their collaborative projects, said Ramasubramanian. That strong sense of community reflects in de Carvalho’s experience.
“CODE^SHIFT focuses on the collective and on how we’re stronger when we work in collaborative rather than competitive ways,” she said. “I’ll take this experience to every place I go.”
Newhouse Master’s Program: Public Relations
Current Position: Senior Account Executive at Edelman
How did you land your current position and what positions did you hold before it?
Edelman reached out regarding an account executive opportunity in June 2022, while I was an account coordinator at Allison Worldwide, and I have since been promoted to senior account executive.
Before this position I had been an account executive at Edelman, an account coordinator at Allison Worldwide and a graphic designer for Hill Communications.
What is an average day like for you on the job?
My day starts with media monitoring. Then I will pivot to any outstanding deliverables which I complete in between internal meetings and client calls. My day ends with another round of media monitoring. I work in a very fast-paced sector of public relations (national and global healthcare policy) so no day looks the same and external factors will often intercept, but a variety of media monitoring, deliverables and meetings are always sprinkled throughout.
How do you feel Newhouse prepared you for your current position?
Completing Newhouse’s thesis track laid the foundation for the writer and strategic thinker that I am today. My thesis was by far the most challenging component of my time at Newhouse, but simultaneously the most rewarding, and forced me to be resilient—which is crucial in the public relations field.
Did Newhouse open your eyes to new professions or aspects of your field you may have not considered when applying?
Newhouse exposed me to communication law courses and graphic design courses, which I did not initially foresee being part of my graduate journey but were greatly appreciated.
What are the moments of your career so far that have been the most important?
Through my professional opportunities so far, I have had the chance to work in New York City and Washington, D.C.—two iconic cities that I likely would not have had the opportunity to live in if it was not for work and have shaped me into the person I am today, both personally and professionally.
What unique features encouraged you to apply to your graduate program?
The 13-month aspect of the program was a big selling point, as well as the variety in the curriculum and emphasis on community, both while completing the program and following graduation. Newhouse’s renowned reputation also made the program stand out among my other options.
What are some of the obstacles and misconceptions that students should be aware of when it comes to your field?
The misconception that networking is the most important part of the Newhouse experience—developing tactical skills and becoming a well-rounded, motivated and mature professional is just as important, and will lay the foundation for success and growth in the professional world post-graduation.
What advice do you have for current or incoming students?
The Newhouse School has published the Fall 2024 issue of the Newhouse Impact Journal, an annual research publication that examines the most transformative aspects of the communications industry.
The journal, which can also be viewed online, explores the evolving landscape of contemporary storytelling through immersive experiences. Essays and commentaries were assembled from the contributions of speakers at the 2024 Newhouse Impact Summit.
Senior Associate Dean Regina Luttrell and Nick Bowman, an associate professor of communications, edited the latest issue, which also features work from Newhouse visual communications faculty Michael O. Snyder and Jason Webb.
The inaugural issue published in January 2024 focused on subjects related to the emerging realm of generative artificial intelligence.
Anthony D’Angelo, a Newhouse public relations professor of practice, is the co-author of the recently published book “Public Relations Writing Worktext: A Practical Guide for the Profession.” This fourth edition textbook for students and early-career practitioners covers topics like content strategy design, media tools and the basic skills needed for professional public relations writing.
A collaboration between WAER and the Newhouse School, the podcast provides another platform to share the research and creative work of students, faculty and staff across a range of topics in media and communications. Recent episodes include:
Anthony D’Angelo talked to PR Daily about how corporate communications could change after the death of the UnitedHealthcare CEO.
Austin Kocher provided insight on Texas’ fragmented border wall to the Austin American-Statesman.
Roy Gutterman discussed Trump’s campaign against the media to stifle dissent.
The Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship launched the IDJC Visiting Fellows program.
Five faculty members and two doctoral students were awarded funding through Newhouse’s internal grants program.
Dennis Kinsey, a distinguished figure in the field of public relations, serves as both the director of the public diplomacy and global communications program and a professor of public relations at the Newhouse School.
Kinsey is from the small town of East Liverpool, Ohio, where he attended East Liverpool High School. During his early academic years he wasn’t interested in most subjects, but a special topic political science class in high school caught his attention.
“The class was quite different from the typical education I received in K-12. It was a political science course, which I don’t believe is commonly offered at that level,” Kinsey said.
Little did he know this class would spark an entire career in political science.
Kinsey earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science from Kent State University, followed by a Ph.D. in communication from Stanford University. Reflecting on his experiences, Kinsey noted that the most challenging part of his academic career was navigating Stanford’s rigorous doctoral program.
“Fortunately, I had a great advisor who would not allow me to fail,” Kinsey recalled. “He kept on top of it, kept pushing me, helped correct things and pointed me in the right direction.”
One of Kinsey’s proudest moments was publishing his first academic article as a master’s student. This early success solidified his passion for research and set the stage for a fulfilling academic career. The tough piece of advice he attributes to his successes? “Stop crying. Don’t be a baby.”
Kinsey’s career path was influenced by a desire to share knowledge and inspire others. While working in political consulting, he found himself drawn to research but was frustrated by the limitations of proprietary work, he said. This led him to pursue a career in public relations and teaching, where he could freely share his findings with the broader public.
His decision to eventually become an academic advisor was inspired by a mentor who possessed a unique ability to encourage and support high-achieving scholars, Kinsey recalled. He said he admired his mentor’s wisdom and guidance, recognizing the impact a mentor can have on a student’s academic journey.
Kinsey often shares advice he’d learned over years of academic rigor with his students at Newhouse, emphasizing the importance of maintaining perspective, learning from failures and striving for continuous improvement.
“Failing is not bad; failing shows progress,” he said.
Kinsey also focuses on helping students defend their doctoral dissertations.
“I don’t have the same pressure to maintain a research agenda, so I focus on helping doctoral students get started,” he said. “Often, it’s a Q-methodology study because they want to learn how to conduct one, and I have some experience with this method.”
Kinsey has many interests outside of academia, including expressing himself creatively through music and art. He enjoys painting and sells his pieces on his website. A talented guitarist, he has been the head of Hondo Mesa Records since 2003.
He also has a passion for storytelling, which benefits him in his career in public relations. He has a love for movies, especially anything with actor Denzel Washington, but has a tough time choosing a favorite.
“I like movies a lot so I could list a zillion of them,” he joked.
When it comes to television, Kinsey loves the show “Breaking Bad,” admiring the depth and complexity of the characters. His ability to appreciate diverse forms of art and storytelling is reflected in his successful career as a mentor.
“The character development is awesome. When [Breaking Bad] started, I disliked this one character-Jessie-and I liked Walter, but as it moved along it flipped on me, and I changed,” he said.
Kinsey’s journey from a small-town student to a renowned academic and mentor proves his passion for learning and his dedication to guiding others. Through constant support and creative outlets, he continues to inspire and shape the next generation of scholars at the Newhouse School.
Kristina Hagerman is a graduate student in the public relations program at the Newhouse School.
Newhouse is constantly buzzing with creative energy. Take one step inside, and you will see it: the students packed into Food.com booths collaborating on magazine projects, the breathtaking displays of photography and graphic design projects decorating the walls, students posted outside with larger-than-life cameras and mics to film a broadcast package.
One of my favorite things about Newhouse is how many opportunities there are to fuel creativity among other Newhouse students, both through Newhouse programs and external endeavors. Not only do these opportunities create space for artistic expression, but they also equip you with unique experiences and provide engaging ways to learn about different industries.
A recent experience I had that ignited my creative passion for the arts was acting in a film project for Audrey Weisburd, a fellow Newhouse student. Wesiburd’s final assignment for her TRF 451 class, Directing, entailed writing and directing a short film. After writing an experimental, dreamlike script, Weisburd formed a crew of students, both inside and outside of Newhouse.
When I arrived on the film set, there were crew members for photography, sound design, production design, etc. Overall, it was a stellar experience! I had a lot of fun learning the script and becoming the character “Kate” for the short film, but I also gained a better understanding of the mechanics behind film sets and production. Additionally, it was rewarding to see all our hard work come together on screen a few weeks later when the short film premiered.
One way to mix groovy dancing with academic enhancing is to attend an event and write about it. The NewsHouse is a fabulous digital publication on campus that has an entire section dedicated to entertainment. Weekly entertainment at local venues like the Syracuse Landmark, the Westcott Theatre, and Funk’n Waffles offers a wealth of inspiration for writing. From covering an up-and-coming DJ’s show to reviewing a traveling Broadway production, these opportunities not only exercise your journalistic brain, but also deepen your connection to the local arts community.
Ally Watkinson, a graduate student in the Goldring program, pitched an event coverage story about one of her favorite artists, Eliza McLamb, to The NewHouse after hearing that McLamb would be performing at The Song & Dance Theatre. Approved by NewsHouse producer, Watkinson got to interview McLamb and wrote an article covering the event.
“It was really cool to bring to life something I envisioned and pitched,” Watkinson said.
Interested in putting multimedia storytelling into practice? Newhouse has loads of student-run magazines that cover different topics and involve many forms of media production. On-campus magazines can include teams of writers, graphic designers, photographers, social media coordinators and creative directors, inviting students to dabble in different creative fields and meet other students with likeminded interests.
One example, Zipped magazine, is a Newhouse publication that focuses on fashion and beauty. Students involved in the magazine can engage in a broad spectrum of media, from photography to promotional social media content.
Newhouse and Syracuse University’s campus as a whole provides so many opportunities for students to have dynamic experiences engaging in creative production. Additionally, these opportunities might just give us the experience we need to take into our professional careers after graduating!
Colette Goldstein is a graduate student in the Goldring arts, style and culture journalism program.
