Therefore cutting solder the correct size is a must-have skill and one that all new students struggle with. Here’s how I do it- cut the pallion size you need (as above) as you need it and keep it in the strip form… sometimes you may need to stick solder (another technique) and you can’t do that with solder glitter (pre-cut pallions). Top tip: make sure you use sharp snips- not side cutters. Happy soldering practice folks! Lucy - Metalsmith on Instagram: "A little insight into how I make my wishbone rings! It was a little tricky figuring out sizing for these and honestly I'm still trying to find the perfect formula but here's some tips to help if you're struggling: Stick with the usual formula for ring sizes but tweak it a little. I use - inside diameter + metal thickness x 𝛑, plus a few extra mm to account for the wishbone shape. This still doesn't end up perfectly for me every time so I always size down a full size and then hammer the soldered rings with a texturing hammer until it gets to the right size. That way I get cool texture and rings the exact size I want every time! If you've never heard of this formula, and are wondering how on earth do I know what the inside diameter is, Google "Rio Grande
