Hush
Hush is an investigative podcast from OPB, uncovering the buried truth about critical stories in the Pacific Northwest. In the first season, we look at the case of Jesse Lee Johnson, a Black man who lived for 17 years on Oregon’s death row for a crime he says he didn’t commit, and we try to understand why the state tried for so long to kill him.

This is the kind of journalism we need now for than ever. Oregon’s racial exclusion laws haven’t gone away so much as shape shifted. This is a heartbreaking story reported with tenacity and care.
Excellent investigative reporting

I first discovered Leah Sottile and Ryan Haas through their Bundyville podcast. I have enormous respect for the in-depth investigative journalism they bring to every project. Their new podcast Hush is illuminating and infuriating, and it provides fascinating insight into the police force and justice system of Oregon’s state capitol.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this series. Glad to hear Jesse’s story, and that you all fought to get to the truth of what really happened on that night. Great investigative work! Thank you for asking the tough questions to investigators on the case like the ones to Quakenbush. Unfortunately, Jesse lost 25 years of his life but his attitude and spirit were inspiring to me. Thank you for shedding light on this case. I look forward to the other stories you all highlight!
