To get you to your destination safely and efficiently, Uber uses data before, during, and after your trip. Explore ways we use and protect your data below.
Requesting a ride
Your location data helps us connect you with nearby drivers as soon as possible, and makes it more convenient for drivers to know where to pick you up.
Before your ride starts
You might be asked for a selfie to verify you’re wearing a mask. Drivers are too. Our technology detects the mask as an object in the photo and doesn’t process any biometric information about you.
Taking a trip
Your location data helps us plan your route to your destination, and also gives you the peace of mind that you’re in the right vehicle and that we know where you are along your journey.
In case of emergency
If you use the in-app emergency button to call emergency services, your name and cell phone number and the car’s make, model, color, license plate and live location are automatically made available to dispatchers.
Paying for your trip
When you book a ride, we put a temporary authorization hold on your card for an approximate amount based on the estimated fare. Once your ride is completed, your card is charged the final fare, including any tip amount.
