Irene joins the Gaiety Theatre company, hoping that her lover, Owen, who has gone to Africa, will return and purchase the castle from the Kershaws. Mistakenly hearing of his death, she accepts the attentions of Christopher Kershaw, who intercepts a message from Owen.
