He hopes to overcome his degrading weakness and to make his fortune. His first experience in the western village is with a typically rowdy set of miners who insist on annoying a preacher in his sermon. He jumps in and with hitherto unknown spirit quiets and overawes the crowd. The preacher, grateful, prevails on him to continue his preaching the Gospel to the rough westerners. His weakness soon returns and overpowers him and it is only through the untiring efforts of a dance-hall girl, who has fallen in love with him that he is saved from a terrible fate. She finds a letter of the girl in the east, asking Gregson to reform and come back to her, and uses it to reform him and make him go to his truly beloved. Written by
