Despite this, he is a highly skilled doctor and a formidable swordsman who, whenever trouble arises, takes action to punish evil in the name of justice. Ranzan was originally born as the heir to the shogun's court physician and was an elite who studied medicine at the Dutch physician Philipp Franz von Siebold's Narutaki Institute in Nagasaki. However, he relinquished his family's fortune to his younger brother and became a son-in-law. At his clinic, he battles common illnesses, while secretly fighting against evil with the help of allies like the Gekoin (Yumiko Nogawa), the gourd-wielding Okoma (Akiko Kana), and Kakube (Isamu Nagato).
