Art was a huge part of the Mayan culture, and was often closely tied to religion. The Mayans mostly created sculptures, ceramic pieces and paintings, though few of the latter survived due to the humid climate of the region. Mayan sculpture was typically made out of stone, wood, stucco or precious stones. Some other materials were occasionally used, such as marine shells (particularly nacre).
