Yes!

If you feel uncertain, you can always install the new version without removing
the old version; run tests to convince yourself that things work as they
always have; and then clobber the old version.  There is no reason other than
available disk space why you couldn't have two versions built at the same time,
but only use one or the other.

What OS is your McIDAS installation running under?

I recall that you were using FreeBSD at one time, and, since I do NOT test new
McIDAS versions under FreeBSD (we don't have a FreeBSD machine to use for
testing), I can't guarantee that a new installation will go without some
hiccups.
