19990909: NOAAPORT NIDS product support in Unidata McIDAS-X

Mark,

Dave Santek asked me to respond to your inquiry about the NIDS products
currently in the NOAAPORT datastream:

The answer is that my NIDS servers (ADIR and AGET) do not directly
support the NIDS products in NOAAPORT. The modification to support
these products is trivial, however (the only difference is a few bytes
of header at the beginning of the product). The only reason that I
have not made the mods is that the NOAAPORT NIDS products are scheduled
to be encrypted in the very near future. In the two year timeframe,
they will be unencrypted and freely available on a proposed 5th
NOAAPORT channel.

If we learn that the plans to encrypt NIDS has been shelved, I will
make the mods to my code and then make them available to SSEC.

I hope that this helps...

Tom
