20000107: McIDAS remote ADDE server (cont.)

Tom,

First, a quick note about things on your LDM server machine:

o pqact is not running; I see a core file in ~ldm that is from pqact

o since pqact is not running, no data is being decoded on your
  machine

o I created the ~mcidas/.mcenv file as per instructions in:

  Initial Preparations
  http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/mcidas/mcx/prepare_mcx.html
    Preparing the mcidas and mcadde Accounts
    http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/mcidas/mcx/mcxacct.html

  .mcenv defines several environment variables that are needed by the
  ADDE remote server processes

o I did some cleanup in ~mcidas/workdata: I removed *.XCD, FRAMENH.001,
  ALLOC.WWW (this one was no problem; it can be ignored), and HRS.SPL.
  This freed up a good bit of disk space for you.

o I noted that GRID decoding was not turned on. I did this by running
  DECINFO and seeing that the status of DMGRID was 'inactive'.
  I activated it as per a previous email as follows:

  DECINFO SET DMGRID ACTIVE

  As soon as pqact is running again, DMGRID should begin decoding
  model data into McIDAS GRID files. One caution about this: McIDAS
  GRID files can be pretty large (take up over 1 GB depending on which
  models you choose to decode). I see from a 'df -k' that the /data
  partition probably does not have enough disk space to accommodate
  all of the GRID data in McIDAS format, so you need to really keep
  on top of disk space use by:

  o making sure McIDAS data file scouring is setup (one scours
    McIDAS data files using McIDAS scouring routines, not the
    LDM scour actions. The reason for this is that there is at
    least one file in the output data directory, /data/mcidasd/SCHEMA,
    whose timestamp does not get updated; the LDM scour will delete
    it and then all MDXX decoding will stop).

  o learing about how to tell McIDAS which grids to decode and which
    to not decode

  It may be wisest to turn OFF GRID decoding until all other parts
  of McIDAS are functioning smoothly. You would do this by running

  DECINFO SET DMGRID INACTIVE

  from a McIDAS-X session run as the user 'mcidas'

For reference, McIDAS data scouring setup is described in:

No, sorry. McIDAS is just too large to do binary releases (> 200 MB).

If you have it, you can use gcc and f2c to build McIDAS. This is a
supported compiler configuration. In order to do this you would need
to:

o install gcc. If you don't already have gcc loaded on your Solaris x86
  machine, you can get it from Sunfreeware.com (http://www.sunfreeware.com/)

o install f2c. You can grab f2c for Solaris x86 from the passworded
  McIDAS FTP site in the unix/760/fortran/Solarisx86 directory.

>It will take some time to get it fixed and back up. Unfortunately, I
>don't think I can use the compiles on any other system because of the
>licensing software.

After you have gcc and f2c (f2c should go in /usr/local/bin; libf2c.a
should go into /usr/local/lib; and f2c should go in /local/include)
you need to edit ~mcidas/mcidas7.6/src/makefile and:

change:

VENDOR          = -vendor
# VENDOR        =

to:

# VENDOR        = -vendor
VENDOR          =

>Just wondering...

The gcc/f2c combination works nicely; you should give it a if you can't
get the Sun compiler licenses.

Thanks. I will try to gcc and f2c. I already have gcc installed. I had the
LDM shut off while you were on there. One of the problems I had before was
setting up the decoder while the LDM was running.

The .mcenv was one thing I missed. So far, I thought I had done
everything, but I missed that one.

I did a DECINFO this morning and it showed the GRIB decoding as active...
I don't understand that. I did check that.

Thanks for all your help. It seems like that should be all of the big
problems.

Tom... Please see my responses embedded in the e-mail.

The following is in my pqact.conf. (LDM has been stopped and started
several times since this was added)

#####
#Entries for XCD decoders
#
DDPLUS|IDS      ^.*     PIPE
        xcd_run DDS
HRS     ^.*     PIPE
        xcd_run HRS

A pqactcheck shows the syntax is correct.

-rw-rw-r--   1 mcidas   apps      432640 Jan  5 09:39 /data/mcidasd/SCHEMA

user mcidas is in the same group as user ldm (apps)

I have it in ~ldm/decoders/bin, but that is in the path of user ldm.

Here is what I have in xcd_run

# Set MCPATH to include MCDATA as its first directory. I assume
# in this example that McIDAS-X was installed in /home/mcidas.

MCHOME=/unidata/home/mcidas
MCDATA=$MCHOME/workdata
MCLOG=$MCDATA/XCD_START.LOG
MCPATH=${MCDATA}:$MCHOME/data:$MCHOME/help

# Setup PATH so that the McIDAS-X executables can be found

PATH=$MCHOME/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/opt/SUNWspro/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/l
ocal/bin:/usr/ucb

# Set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include all directories (other than those
searched
# by default) that are needed to be searched to find shared libraries.
# For this example, I assume that the shared Fortran library is located
# in /opt/SUNWspro/SC4.2/lib

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/openwin/lib:/opt/SUNWspro/lib:$MCHOME/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/ucb
lib

All of a sudden, I am getting MD files. I have no idea what I did to get
it working. I can now plot surface data.

I now have a .RAT file to match each .RAP file.

I still cannot call up any grids, but the LDM was shut off overnight. (I
left the office while I was in the middle of working on this problem and
didn't restart it.)

> o ~mcidas/.mcenv

I do not see a ~mcidas/.mcenv

DMAP LWPATH.NAM
PERM SIZE LAST CHANGED FILENAME DIRECTORY
-rw-       6612    Jan 05 09:39     LWPATH.NAM      .

> o the contents of ~mcidas/workdata/LWPATH.NAM

See attached

> o the output from 'DMAP MD'

Shows all of the MDXX* files in /data/mcidasd
Shows all other MD files in /unidata/home/mcidas/data, except MDRDEC.CFG,
which is in /unidata/home/mcidas/workdata

> o a directory listing of ~mcidas/workdata

See attached

Again, I don't know why we're now getting data, but I won't complain ;-)
Still not sure on the grid files.

Tom,

We may have reached a point where it would simply be easier

reply, but here is the address, login and password. Let me
know when you're done so I can change the password.

Thanks.

Tom
